R2 Mission Kashmir is out now. R1 as well as R2 are both released by COLUMBIA and hence have the first opportunity for a fair comparison bet R1 and R2. Hopefully, R2 DVD is straight from Film to PAL and not copied from NTSC DVD, unlike ASOKA in reverse.

Any volunteers??

I've got Lagaan R1 NTSC an R2 PAL - which seem identical source wise. If you examine it hard it enough I'm sure you'll find some differences as the PAL DVD is dual disc so should in theory be better encoded - but from screen shots you can't tell the difference. I would say Mission Kashmir is probably the same as NTSC R1 disc video and audio quality wise.

If R2 (assuming they are PAL) DVDs of LAGAAN and MISSION KASHMIR are directly from Film, they must run 4% faster. Also, PAL has higher res than NTSC and hence PQ should be better for PAL version. Is it??

Thanks.

Yes the PAL Lagaan R2 DVD runs 4% faster but whether the higher resolution is significant enough to make the PAL DVD look better is debatable. Like I say if you look hard enough on high-end equipment then you’ll find the differences that results from better resolution and better bit rate.

I posted some hi-res screens from R2 PAL DVD before, but here are they are again;

..they show the same flaws found on R1 DVD – noise reduction and edge enhancement. Compression problems if any is probably better due to better bit rate.

CT does NTSC and PAL DVDs from the HD master. The PAL
DVDs used to have aliasing due to a poor downsampling
filter which the NTSC DVDs did not have. I stopped
buying CT PAL DVDs 3 years ago. Don't know if the aliasing
problem still exists.

PS LOTR PAL is supposed to be much better than LOTR NTSC
