Yes, that's the one.

A few Yrs back Shemaroo had a huge defective discs problem and merchants, as well as, consumers stopped buying Shemaroo DVDs. Lately, Shemaroo DVDs have been OK.

I too had that one.. it was a silver disc.. it was defective.. later i bought another one, a gold disc (Shemaroo) which is working perfect!

I disliked Shemaroo because of the HDDCS DVD.

I came here and learnt that Shemaroo is better than other DVDs at least.

Some of their titles are good, while others are bad.

What is the point of releasing these classics, when the original aspect ratio has been modified by cropping the top and bottom to make an artificial wide format aspect ratio? The colorizing I can understand and accept, but why they need to change the aspect ratio is beyond my comprehension.

I believe that they can maintain the normal 4:3 aspect ratio. What's the problem in that? I understand that the theaters do not support such a thing.. but its fine.

I believe thay should colorize movies only for home-video release. We have had such cases - like ultra colourized Raj Kapoor's Chori Chori (1956), Shammi Kapoor's Dil Tera Deewana (1962) and Kishore Kumar's Half Ticket (1962). Thay did it only for DVD release. Btw, its pathetic in terms of colorization. The only tint seen is blueish-pink! The faces appear pinkish-purple and water appears stark blue.

Personally, I would be happier with just a restoration of the original B&W prints released to blu-rays.

Yep! That's more that enough! No degradation, no phony stuff, all original!

What was the point of cropping off the top and the bottom of the images when the DVDs cannot create a proper widescreen DVD?
:?

I am not sure what you mean by "proper widescreen DVD". But as far as why the idiots in bollywood are choosing to crop the top & bottom of the picture to create an artificial 'wide' aspect ratio, it is simply a marketing ploy. Unfortunately there are enough ignorant customers/viewers who are more interested in filling up their screens, rather than watching the movie as intended by the director. The irony is, earlier they were cropping 2.35:1 & 1.78:1 movies from the sides to fill up older 1.33:1 (4x3) aspect ratio SD TVs. Now with the predominance of 16:9 HD TVs, they are cropping older 1.33:1 movies from the top & bottom to fill the screens. While continuing to crop 2.35:1 movies, albeit slightly less than before, to fill up 16:9 screens. Bottom line is, until consumers insist on only original aspect ratios, this nonsense will continue and in fact will become even more common.

Naya Daur restorers have cropped the original 1.33:1 ratio to produce an artificial 16X9 ratio. But in spite of this the Shemaroo DVDs have an aspect ratio of 4X3. What was the point of cropping the portions? -- That is what I meant! I meant that they do not produce anamorphic widescreen DVDs of Naya Daur.

I completely agree with you.

Similarly, Shemaroo had shamelessly cropped off the side portions of the widescreen film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam producing a fake, annoying and pathetic 4X3 aspect ratio. Can't thay preserve the original aspect ratio? What is the problem?

Mughal-E-Azam restorers have cropped the original 1.33:1 ratio to produce an artificial 16X9 ratio. But in spite of this the Shemaroo and Eros DVDs have an aspect ratio of 4X3. What was the point of cropping the portions? -- That is what I meant! I meant that they do not produce anamorphic widescreen DVDs of Mughal-E-Azam.

Since the cropping of Mughal-e-Azam was done by it's idiotic restorers, Shamearoo or Eros cannot be held responsible for it. But you are absolutely right that they should have encoded the DVD so as to at least preserve the cropped 16:9 aspect ratio. But then again, to expect Shamearoo or zEros to do anything that conforms to logic is expecting a bit too much.

The problem is that they have idiots, with zero technical expertise making technical decisions at these companies. More importantly, companies like Shameraoo take their customers for granted and therefore feel no need to do what the consumer wants. But then again, majority of the customers too are ignorant and they demand that their screen be filled, to hell with the actual picture.

Sorry I don't know the answer to this. Hopefully someone else will chime in and answer the query. But if I were to guess, I'd think they will have cropped it. Although on second thoughts, since the colorized 'Naya Daur' was a straight to DVD release, it's quite possible that they may have stuck to the original aspect ratio.

Absolutely! Is Naya Daur colour also on zEros?

Yeah! So is zEros! They are partial towards new movies! The HDDCS and Rangeela DVD thay produced is very bad! They have converted the original 5.1 DD to mono! And they've panned that mono channel to 5.1 channels and proudly call it DD 5.1 Surround Sound. They've added a motion blur effect to HDDCS. And importantly, they've cropped the side portion as well as the top-bottom portion.

I'm talking about the side portion! I know that the top portion is cropped!
And by the way, Naya Daur was theatrically released as well!

I can confirm that Naya Daur is cropped (top and bottom) and is a non-anamorphic DVD. Certain scenes are also chopped and seem to be available on a separate disc labelled as deleted scenes. Not sure what the sense is in releasing the movie this way - but anyhow I am glad to also own the B/W version.
