More like, Paheli was remake of Duvidha.

I remember Mani Kaul for THE CLOUD DOOR, a beautiful film. I rather see this kind of adult film as opposed to vulgar but classified as 'U' or 'UA' films.

Very sad to hear that.

Just the other day they showed Junglee at TIFF in their "Golden Era Of Indian Cinema" series.
Also, we watched his BUDTMEEZ on DVD two days ago.

Film actor Shammi Kapoor passes away
Agencies | Aug 14, 2011, 09.33AM IST

MUMBAI: Veteran actor Shammi Kapoor, hailed as 'Elvis Presley of India' and whose famous yell 'Yahoo' signified the arrival of a rebel star against the reigning trio of his time Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand and Dilip Kumar, passed away here on Sunday morning due to chronic renal failure.

The 79-year-old legend, who was often compared to Elvis Presley due to his looks, was in the ICU of Breach Candy Hospital and breathed his last on Sunday morning, family sources said.

The funeral will take place on Monday morning, they informed.

Kapoor is survived by his wife Neeladevi, son Aditya Raj, daughter Kachan Desai.

For the last few years, he was undergoing dialysis for three days a week.

Born Shamsher Raj Kapoor on October 21, 1931, Kapoor was the middle son of veteran theatre and film actor Prithviraj Kapoor and younger brother of showman Raj Kapoor.

Despite his family background, Shammi's entry into Bollywood was initially not successful even though he worked with major heroines like Madhubala in Rail ka dibba, Suraiya in Shama Parwana and Nalini Jaywant in Hum Sab Chor Hai.

His initial movies flopped at the box office. He reinvented himself with Tumsa Nahi Dekha cutting his hair in the famous duck-tail style of the 50s and never looked back since then.

With the success of Junglee in 1961, an entire decade reeled under its colourful impact.

Shammi heralded the swinging 60s and a large part of his appeal was primarily due to the immensely catchy and upbeat numbers like "Suku Suku","O Haseena Zulfo wali", "Aaj kal tere mere pyar ke charche", "Aaja Aaja Main hoon Pyar tera" where he was at his boisterous best.

Even though success came with light weight tales like Kashmir ki kali, Rajkumar, Jaanwar and An evening in Paris, his performances in flicks like Junglee, Badtameez, Bluff Master and Pagla Kahin Ka, Teesri Manzil, Brahmachari silenced his critics.

Andaz released in 1971 was his last movie as a leading man but his character roles in Vidhata, Hero, Prem Rog were well received.

Shammi was a computer aficionado and his last years were veered towards spiritualism.

This is sad news indeed, he is to be missed. I've been following his youtube page on and off for little last while. Below is the last video he posted 3 weeks ago. Here, he talks about his relationship with Kishore Kumar. If you view a larger part of his youtube videos--you essentially discover a personal side of Shammi Kapoor and the world he lived in through his own eyes.

Art director Samir Chanda has also passed away:

Noted art director Samir Chanda passes away
August 19, 2011 10:04
India's top art director Samir Chanda, known for work in films like Guru, Omkara [ Images ] and Rang De Basanti [ Images ], passed away last night due to heart-related ailments, his family said.

The art director and production designer, who had won the National Film Award for best art direction thrice in his 32-year-old career, breathed his last at a hospital in Mumbai [ Images ] Thursday evening.

"It is with deep regret that I convey the tragic news of the demise of my dear friend and reputed art director Samir Chanda a few hours back of a heart failure," director Sangeeth Sivan said.

A favourite of celebrated film director Mani Ratnam, Chanda was best known for works in films like Guru, Omkara, Rang De Basanti, Dil Se, Aks [ Images ], Raavan, Krrish [ Images ] and Ram Lakhan.

On a side note, I'm disgusted by the way Bollywood Hungama have treated the deaths of Shammi Kapoor and Samir Chanda. While the news of Shammi Kapoor was relegated to the bottom section of the main front page, the news of Samir Chanda was reported with the headline 'Samir Chanda's death sends Joker in a tizzy' - someone passes away, and they are bothered about film schedules?

Noted ghazal singer Jagjit Singh dead
CNN-IBN | 10-Oct 10:15 AM

Mumbai: Born on February 8, 1941, 'the ghazal king' was a singer, composer, activist and entrepreneur. He has sung in several languages including Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Nepali. Jagjit Singh entered the music circuit at a time which was primarily dominated by Pakistani ghazal singers, and Indian singers were considered relatively lesser authentic than their Pakistani counterparts.

Unlike other ghazal singers, Singh did not hesitate in lending his voice for films. His silky voice ruled during early 80's in films like Prem Geet, Saath Saath and Arth. However, his major work is spread over more than 60 filmy and non filmy albums.

Jagjit Singh was also known for modern approach and infusion of technology in the traditional art of ghazal singing. Singh was the first Indian music director to use the technique of multi-track recording for his album 'Beyond Time'.

Recipient of Padma Bhushan award, Jagjit Singh was the man behind making the ghazal genre available and understandable to all. Prior to Singh, ghazal singing was considered as an elite art, which was difficult for the common mass to understand due to high class Urdu and Persian.

Jagjit Singh broke this myth by coming up with songs such as 'Kaagaz ki kashti', 'Chaak jigar ke', 'Kal chadhanvi ki raat thi', and 'Shaam se aankh me name si hai'. He mixed the words of legends like Ghalib, Qateel Shifai, Firaq Gorakhpuri, Nida Fazli and Sudarshan Faakir with melodious indigenous tunes and achieved a state where nothing came in between him and his listeners.

Later when television started showcasing music videos, he was among one of the prominent members of the music fraternity to avail the facility. He again came up with brilliant albums such as 'Face to Face', 'Marasim', 'Aaeena', and 'Dil Kahin Hosh Kahin'.

Jagjit Singh had also given his voice for ex-prime minister Atal Bihari Bajpayee poems in the albums 'Nayi Disha' and 'Samvedna'.

Jagjit Singh is survived by his wife Chitra Singh, with whom he had produced several record breaking albums. Their only son Vivek Singh had died in a road accident in 1990.

Music legend Bhupen Hazarika passes away

Quote:
His music carried the smell of the dark earth and the hum of the deep rivers he sang so passionately about. Bard and balladeer of the Brahmaputra, Bhupen Hazarika, 85, who passed away owing to multiple organ failure at Mumbai's Kokilaben Hospital on Saturday, was not only the greatest cultural icon of Assam but also the region's biggest cultural ambassador.

"He was not just a singer but a social reformer who brought the Northeast closer to the rest of India," film director and Hazarika's long-time companion Kalpana Lajmi told a news channel. National award-winning director Jahnu Barua said, "We have lost the Dronacharya of music. He was a creator whose quality compositions were easily identifiable and enjoyed by the common people."

A Dada Saheb Phalke winner, Hazarika's music echoed beyond borders. In a poll in Bangladesh five years ago, his song, 'Manush Manusher jonno (Humans are for humanity)' was voted the second most-loved number after the country's national anthem, 'Amar Sonar Bangla'.

Singer, songwriter, composer, filmmaker - he was a complete artist. Hazarika composed for Bollywood films too without ever compromising either on his creative integrity or abandoning his roots in traditional Assamese folk. Yet he unfailingly found the popular pulse with tracks such as 'Dil hoom hoom kare' (Rudaali), 'Zara dheere zara dheeme' (Ek Pal) and 'Naino mein darpan hai' (Aarop).

"You paint through your songs. But I can't sing with my paintbrush. It's up to you to fill this lacuna in my artistry. That's why I have taken you," master painter MF Husain is said to have told Hazarika after asking him to provide the music for his film, 'Gajagamini'.

This one is another huge loss:(

Hazarika was a NATIONAL HERRITAGE, imho, Jagjit was a legend.

Btw I was trying to seek some orig Ghazals by Ghazal Singer Iqbal Banoo, found out she passed away too:(

"ulfaat ki nayee manzal to chala"
"dasht e tanhaii main"

A great poet and writer, painter SAADEQUEIN:(

That reminds me of a beautiful verse or two from Mirza Ghalib:

Sab Kahan Kuch Lalla o Gul Main Numaiyan hogayeen,
Khaak Main Kaya Soortain Hongee ke Pinhan Hogayeen

May lord peace be upon their souls!

After so many years, I cant still get over the loss of greatest song write ANAND BAKSHI, imho, he was one of the greatest loss to the history of song writing and since then it has never been the same and will never be the same.
