I had seen this Ultimate Edition (Vol 1, 2, 3, 4), with claims of extensive re-mastering, on the store shelves, last month, but thought of re-mastering claim as just a sales gimmick. How could they provide modern audio (surround/ DD/ DTS etc) to mono audio of JB early releases.

Jan 2007 issue of Widescreenreview has reviewed Vol 1 of this set. Remember, WSReview always gave very poor grades to older JB films on DVD. For Audio, as well as, for Video. But, the new remastered edition gets really high marks from them. Improvements, from previous versions, are marginal on newer Bond films (because newer films already got good DVDs) but on the older Bond films, improvements are phenomenal.

Some excerpts:

The remastering was a huge undertaking, spanning over a two-and-a-half year period by DTS and John Lowry.

Over 37 millions of dirt pieces were removed from 42 miles of film, using the comparative frame-by-frame digital restoration techniques.

Audio soundtracks all received the same regal treatment, remixed & re-equalized. (Remastering to present day multichannel DD/ DTS audio; and plenty of bass; improvements in audio fidelity; imroved dynamic range)

Lots of Extras (Each film has a separate extras disc) including many multi-angle shots, deleted scenes etc.

Before X-mas I saw these sets priced at $ 75, and now at under $ 50.

Only negative: Is it worth buying this set if you already have earlier released set. Specially, when HD-DVD/ Blue Ray format is already here ??

I'm waiting for the Blue Ray versions as all DVDs are coming from 1080p HD masters. No doubt Sony will release them in 2007.

How much "better" could a 1080p Blu-Ray of From Russia With Love be than a good DVD of it... ?

I agree!! who wants to watch/buy SD once you have experience blue ray, or HD DVD.

But Mike, unfortunately even in current status quo, you have to have 1080P TV with HDMI to tap full potential of these format!

I must tell you PS3 is an amazing machine too!

Check these R4 editions - note that except R1, no other region seems to have the original soundtrack (other than 5.1)

I have 3 of these new ultimate editions (R4), Goldfinger, Dr No and Goldeneye.

Picture quality is very very good for dvd for the 2 older films. Audio is also remastered very well. The r4's dont have mono tracks but the 5.1 and DTS options are pretty well done and dont sound as phony as other remixes.

Goldeneye isnt as good in the video department. In fact in some parts, it's worse than the original dvd. But overall, there's less edge enhancement, less compression artefacts and it looks smoother. But it's not as huge an improvement as the older films.

From the DVDBeaver.com comparison, the "original" DVD release of From Russia With Love actually seems to look somewhat better (generally) than the "2-Disc Special Edition" release. The latter appears a bit "cleaner," but I prefer the colors of the former.

Eh. I finally got around to watching (at a store) a 1080p presentation of Ice Age 2: The Meltdown on Blu-Ray, shown on a Sharp Aquos screen (everything hooked up properly), the sound coming in nice and clear. I'll admit, it looked beautiful, better than DVD. That said, as I got up to leave my seat and exit the store, I saw the price of the whole set-up; I then decided I was extremely happy with my DVD player, and pranced all the way home — .

Bluntly put, NO! Wait for the new format to be released.

commando,

the old edition has boosted reds (look at the skin tones). Add to that the imrpvoed sharpness and compression and it's definitely a better image.

That said, I'll agree the new editions may be too warm in their colour but it still looks better than the old IMHO.

I suppose the colors of the "2-Disc Edition" do look a bit more "natural"; nevertheless, to me, they somehow seem murky when compared with the older "Special Edition" release. I wonder how the sound compares.

it's cleaner and there's less distortion during some of the higher music cues etc. I would have liked the restored mono track on my r4 editions (the r1's have the mono option) but the remixed 5.1 options are better than the old mono regardless.

Breaking News:

UE DVDs of all 21 Bond movies so far are expected to be released as a "Casino Pack" by Excel Home Videos in India and Sri Lanka very soon :-)

This is good news for fans because unlike Sony Home Entertainment DVDs and SaReGaMa DVDs which were doing bond in india, Excel do not unnecessarily cut the movies or reframe them to 4x3 etc.

Couple of years back, Excel did have MGM tie up which is when they released James Bond SEs in India.

who knows, they may do blu rays too...
