Below are screenshots to the Sathyan Anthikaad classic. It made the Mohanlal-Srinavasan team very famous in Kerala. It is also the only Indian movie I think to spawn 2 successful sequels ('Pattanapravesam' and 'Akkare..Akkare...Akkare').

-Picture quality is OK, and not bad.
-Sound is not DD5.1 as printed on DVD cover. It's panned
mono but does the job. I don't think Mallu movies were not
more than mono sound back then anyways.
-Subtitles suck!!
-No special features or trailers.

Overall, a decent DVD but not great by Tamil DVD standards.

OK, so you keep this post alive and I'll do more previews in the future !! :D

Cropped. Surya's Chandralekha was 16:9 enhanced and about 2.20:1, with picture somewhat better than this. Is this the kind of DVD Surya is producing now?

Malayalam movies had a lot of cinemascope movies from 70's and to early 80's. But it all changed with the arrival of 'less gimmicky' family oriented comedy movies. Most films from the late 80's and early 90's had an aspect ratio around 1.66. So I don't think it's cropped. But 16x9 anamorphic would've been nice. Current mallu movies are all shot in scope except for Art films.

PQ seems similar to 'Godfather' dvd. I'll sure be watching this movie. Thanks for posting the screen shots, Pillairaj! :thumbs:

Ah, I see. Thanks for the information.

How many, if any, older (60s and 70s) or arthouse Malayalam films are available on DVD? The only older one I know of is Chemmeen.

I think Chemmen is the oldest mallu dvd available. I'd like to see some of the really old B&W mallu movies come to dvd. I think the problem is that the DVD companies have a hard time finding the old prints. And these prints are not kept in the best conditions, most of them are probably destroyed. :bangbang:

I was just in Kerala in August. TV channels such as Asianet, Surya TV, and Kairali all local channels, run old B&W movies. Most seem to be in 'ok' condition. I couldn't tell if it is off VHS.

From a conversation with SURYA a year ago, it seems they do not believe in a market for DVDs including newer ones, let alone any classics. Their VCDs and VCDs from other companies are rampant for Mallu flicks, and they are cheaper to manufacture. On top of that Malayalees don't care for any disc based stuff as long as they can get a VHS tape.

That's my few cents :rolleyes:

What is a good place to get Mallu VCDs and what brands would be the best and worst quality?

I'm sure I can find few VCDs in Coimbatore (TN), which is very close to Kerala. Next time I go I'll be sure to check.

Your best bet is to buy VCD brands such as RAFA and Weston for Mallu flicks. They generally present widescreen and are decent prints. Weston is a brand that probably is only available in Kerala. If you go for others make sure you buy them at a store and they play it for you before buying. Else, you're bound to get a lemon since piracy in malayalam VCDs is really widespread. RAFA is top quality in all.

I watched the dvd of Priyadarashan's(Hera Pheri, Virasat) THENMAVIN KOMBATHU (1994). The dvd is released by SAINA. There are English subtitles of ok quality.

PQ: The transfer is presented in the film's orginal aspect ratio of 2.35.1, and in anamorphic. The print is clean for the most parts. Its an ayngaran quality transfer! K V Anand's (KHAKHEE, MUDHALVAN) cinematography is just amazing.

SQ: Sound is encoded in DD 5.1 from a mono source. The dialogues sound a little canned from the dubbing. But the songs sounds good.

Overall a pretty good dvd for a very funny Mallu movie.
