The film starring Kamal Hassan and Madevan is now out from Ayngaran and is featured on a double disc set. Disc one is the Dolby Digital version, while disc two is the DTS version. The film is anamorphic 2.35:1 and features decent picture quality. However the DTS sound is the real winner and really is on par with most American DTS DVDs in the market.

Click here for the film review Anbe Sivam review

IMO I felt the film was a tad slow and some of the graphic violence was too strong for family audiences. Still the film features nice comic moments from Madevan, and some wonderful touching scenes of a failed romance.

BMD is to release the DVD soon which will feature progressive anamoprhic 2.35:1 transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1, and English and French Subtitles.

Are BMD's other titles, such as Hey Ram and Thenali, also progressive?

(awaiting the new OAR DVD of Indian, so I can finally see it :) )

That was tentative but from the poor results of the test they feel it now might be a little longer

Yes it is on all DTS DVD done by Ayngaran, and the quality has been amazing. INO the best DTS DVDS in order would be Anbe Sivam and April Manathil.

IMO I wouold get the Ayngaran version as it has been colour corrected as per the Cinematographer instuctions, and also features a top quality DTS mix. If you have a progressive set-up then go for the BMD version.

Hmm...shouldn't progressive mastering be just a matter of adjusting a few settings? Why is it taking so long? Surely they must have some professionals helping them do this. And if not, we should take up a collection to send Mhafner and Sknath to London! :) :D

It isn't just progressive they are testing other stuff like DTS ES, Dolby Ex, and also a new form of Subtitling.

can you tell them to make sure the subtitles are within the picture (not on the black bars)? thanks. i think they already do this, but i don't want them to screw up a good thing.

You mean subtitles with good grammar? :)

At least Ayngaran is actively trying to improve. None of the Hindi companies give even decent picture quality. They all slap "16x9 enhanced anamorphic widescreen" on the cover as a gimmick.

BTW, is there a DD format with a discrete center-rear channel or is only the matrixed center channel available for now?

DTS ES- features matrixed rear center channel in theaters and in home video features both matrixed and discrete rear center channel. DTS 5.1 ES and DTS 6.1 ES DISCRETE
