A restored version of this movie is available on DVD.

Staring: Smita Patil, Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Deepti Naval
Running time: 118 minutes
Format: NTSC
Video: 1.42:1 (4:3)
Sound: Dolby Digital 2.0
Subtitles: English
Year: 1987 (cinema), 2011 (DVD)
DVD: Single sided dual layered
Author: National Film Development Corporation (NFDC)
Release by: NFDC/Shemaroo
Alternate versions: One by Eagle (AVOID!!!!!)

Here are my preliminary observations as I've not watched the whole movie :

The good -
- Taken from a restored print
- Excellent color rendition
- Great detail and crispness
- Clear, distortion-free audio
- High bitrate (generally above 7 mbps)

The bad -
- Certain scenes lack shadow detail (only 2-3 instances)
- Blurring and other motion artifacts are visible
- Slight cropping is noticeable
- Artwork is quite mediocre
- No extras

VERDICT : Highly recommended for movie buffs. The motion artifacts and lack of extras lets this DVD down. Overall, its a very good DVD for an older movie. After ages have we seen such a crisp, clear, detailed and vibrant print for an older Bollywood movie.
From me, its an 8/10 :D

Thanks for the detailed review, Ragz. I have this DVD myself. The PQ is pretty decent, but this is one of those 29.970 fps blended progressive transfers as I had mentioned in one of my earlier posts.

Even the recent NFDC DVDs like Ashad Ka Ek Din have similar transfers. But, once in a while NFDC does come up with proper progressive transfers (Tahader Katha is an example). I'll post some screenshots of Tahader Katha soon. In my opinion, its one of their best transfers till date and one of their rare anamorphic ones.

Thank you for your comments, Charolastra. This DVD does show double images but it doesn't show combing artifacts (also seen in the case of Eagle's Khoobsurat and Ultra's Pyaasa, not sure why). In spite of that, I'm content with the PQ. The audio still has minute hissing issues. The sound effects, however, sound quite crisp. I find this better than the Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro DVD. (which was dimmer and colors weren't lively)

I'll wait for the "Tahader Katha" screenshots from your side. Thanks.
