I am getting fed up by companies saying they will do DTS then not doing it at all...letting me down. First DEI, then Ayngaran, now Jolly saying DTS might be done.

But to be honest I doubt DTS will be such a big hit with average consumers, particually Indian consumers. Majority of them don't care about if the sound is in real Dolby 5.1 (only us Zulmies) you think there gonna give a dam about DTS. And if some do maybe only a less amount of units would be sold worldwide as Indian DVD marketing is non-exsistent, with exception to EROS.

Alright DTS is a great feature (half of my region 1 collection is DTS only) but first get your picture quality sorted out, then sort out your Dolby 5.1 sound then and ONLY THEN see if you can work with DTS. Hindi DVD are known to have the worse 5.1 sound on DVD. Many EROS titles VIDEO SOUND titles are proof of that.

And Jolly if your still thinking about it how about doing a film in DTS compleate with brand new done picture transfer of the film from its interpostive print not cinema prints!!

Your absolutely right Sunny, another problem that will arise as well is that people will buy these DTS titles and not have a proper setup therefore will get no audio coming through their system.

If Jolly and others who have promised to come out with these titles, they should include a 5.1 track as well so that consumers dont get miffed and start a big complaint. Doing this though will compromise the video quality big time which they already dont know how to do properly! ERO$, now some DEI, Video Sound etc.

Ditch the DTS idea and improve the video and audio quality first! Once you have mastered this then go on to bigger and better possiblities!!!

If the consumer is not satisfied with a product now how can he/she buy your newer product??? It will be in their heads that old product had so many problems how can this one be improved if the old one has not been fixed??!!

My two cents ImageImage

How many people do you know that buy Indian DVDs that even know what DTS is, besides the fact that their player can output it? I've seen so many mangled 5.1 setups that not even DTS would make a difference. Eros, Video Sound, YRF, and the other usual suspects can't make a quality DVD with the bits available, so DTS will result in either even worse video or in pseudo 5.1 in DTS.

Also, I doubt DTS discs would sell well. Indian movies are rarely shorter than 2.5 hours long, so maintaining good video quality will be difficult with DTS 5.1 and DD 5.1 on one disc. And Indian video stores will most likely be reluctant to stock separate DTS and DD versions of one movie.

DVD companies, get your act together with video and audio quality right now, THEN tackle DTS. Don't start renovating the house before the foundation is laid.

I have discussed this DTS thing with Pros, the main stream authors regarding DTS soundtrack!

Well-said Sunny. How many of you keep your sub woofer when watching a Hindi DVD? I always disconnect my sub when watching a Desi DVD because it gives a loud boom sound instead of low frequency noises.
How many Hindi DVD’s are in proper DD 5.1? And actually how many movies (not DVD) use rear channels as effectively as English movies.

I think most of the entry level new Av Receivers are coming with features like DTS and PL11, so if one has a 5.1 setup what’s stopping them from getting DTS if it is included in the disk.

But again Video is the most important of all the above. I would buy any disk that has Progressive Video coupled with decent sound.

I do care for DTS but only movies like Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park etc., but not for all the crap movies.

Well I do keep my subwoofer on but I don't watch bad Hindi movies on bad dvds. The reason why there's a loud boom sound is because most bad Hindi movie sound recording has mid-range bass that gets amplified by the subwoofer. dvds like Dil Se, Lagaan and even Dil Chahta Hai are very good but yes they are rare.

Out of 50 Hindi DVD’s I own I can had pick the DVD’s that has good clear Bass. And I only (Own) watch DVD’s from DEI, DEI/EROS most of the time. And my speakers can handle the Bass effectively and I always set my front speakers large to handle this problem so not to direct all the bass to my Sub. Again this all depends upon how well our receivers manage the Low frequencies.
I think Dil Se is one of the better sounding DVD’s and also it uses the rear channels very effectively (hats off to A R Rehman).

The titles you mentioned were mixed by H. Sridhar, weren't they?

In any case, H Sridhar isn't the only good sound recordist/mixer/designer around. There's of course Nakul Kamte and Dwarak Warrier - and to an extent ppl like Jitendra Choudhary.

Dwarak warrier is actually very very good, too bad he has not experimented with location sound. He's done a good job in Jungle and Company. DVD would have great sound if not for Eros's mess up :)

H. Sridhar was the final mixer while Nakul Kamte was the production mixer. I suppose this means that Sridhar mixed the final DTS and DD mixes and Kamte was on the set recording the sound.

Sridhar's DTS mixes are always good, especially when he teams with Shivkumar. He is the only Indian sound engineer who has mastered the DTS format for the better. He now works with DTS ES for South Indian fims, a format I would like Hindi cinema to use instead of Dolby Digital.

If you want to hear his best work then listen to Ratnam's Dil Se or Kanathil Muthamittal. Dwarak Warrier is also a person I appericiate for his sound work in Hindi cinema.

Sorry to backtrack on a 1.5 year old post but I think I missed some replies

H. Sridhar is not the mixer of either Lagaan or DCH, he did the final mix for the music, not the films. Nakul Kamte did the sound design (and on-set recording) for both films.
