If you're after a really scary film, I'd recommend Chandni Chowk To China or Kambakkht Ishq.

Many thanks bhaskar, nice, i will go get the 1980 Gehrayee pronto, i think Shemaroo has it. Seems to be a classic
You're hard on Akshay Kumar. I've only seen him in trashy 8x10 tasveer and Aitraaz (both quite enjoyable)

Thanks again for the tip. I've seen Gehrayee now and it really was good for an indian horror film, probably the best i've seen yet. OK, not wildly scary but done seriously and that young teenage girl (Kolhapure) was very good, impressive in her part. The spirit voices were cool also (no spoiler i hope) and like the thai film shutter, interesting, the notion about spirits.
A truly good black magic film, that's rare.
I've no idea if this 1983 indian film was inspired (besides of course by the Exorcist in some aspect) by an older indian movie? But i'm sure it has inspired lots of newer one's in India as Varma's stuff - Raat & Phoonk

Glad you enjoyed Gehrayee, it's certainly the only Hindi horror film I remember that managed to be creepy. I saw Shaapit recently, and although it's not a great film (and not at all scary), it did manage to hold my interest.

The Hot Spot Online does a lot of reviews of Hindi horror films, maybe you could get some more suggestions from here?

Jadu Tona [1978] was the first hindi film on black magic.... a bit dated now, but well made for its era
