The Kanthaswamy Blu-ray is another winner from the Ayngaran stable. The PQ is reference-grade paralleling Sivaji. But, don't expect the same kind of picture though. It showcases the unique colour palette and the hues that were present throughout the whole film, with even the film grain being reproduced faithfully. The AQ is again A+. There is no other way to describe it. Like I mentioned earlier, though the movie by itself isn't too good at all, the Kanthaswamy Blu-ray is a worthy challenger to Sivaji's mantle as the best Indian Blu-ray

Thank you for the postive feedback. Not many people realise that 30% of Kanthaswamy was actually shot on 16mm - upconverted to 35mm!!!

The DPX was a very difficult source to work with. I owe a big thanks to AP International who encoded this into a AVC!

The DVD was also made from the same DPX source. When you compare this with the blu-ray - its a night/day difference.

The next blu-ray release Unnai Pol Oruvan will be India's first DIGITAL to DIGITAL release on blu-ray!!! This film was entirely shot on the RED camera and we have used its direct source for the blu-ray encode.

Kanthaswamy - Excellent reference quality BD. Even though Kanthaswamy was a bad flick, this disc is a must have for your BD collection. As usual great work Sunny. Keep up the good work man. Can't wait for Unai Pol Oruvan. Dates please?

On an other note, I am surprised EROS is not utilizing your services for authoring.

How was it difficult? Very grainy?

Unnai Pol Oruvan should be out around Mid-Jan 2010

I've no comment for ERO$. Its a company I do not trust.

The DPX was made from various negative sources (35mm, 16mm,) and had various range of colour schemes on the log files. This can be quite trying for the hardware when encoding to AVC (even at 10 pass). Thankfully the guys at AP international managed to ensure the director's intentions was retained for the blu-ray encode.

Is it bad? Ayngaran still manages to bring out decent quailty DVDs and Blu-rays (with my input). While other companies (Yash Raj Films, EROS, Big Pictures etc...) rely on D5 sources I was able to convince Ayngaran to use DPX.

Kanthaswamy AQ is the best. Surrond speakers are very active entire film. Awesome job...!!!. I personally feel Ayan PQ is better than Kanthaswamy.

I am looking forward to purchase Kanthasamy and probably Ayan on Blu-ray, as both, have a decent video and audio quality.
I would prefer Ayngaran Blu-ray have HD audio more often (DTS HD MA in bitstream 5.1 and/or in 7.1) for their upcoming releases.

Hope, Isai Thendral for blu-ray will be out within next year.
What will be the next release after Unnai pol oruvan?
It will be great if different genre of tamil films could be release on Blu-ray instead of selected hits.

Is there any 3D film releasing in Indian cinema in 2010?

Yarulb Latigid.

I really loved the PQ of Kanthaswamy. The BluRay is miles ahead of the DVD. Loved the work on this Sunny, probably the second best after Sivaji. One thing though, I have no idea what the director thought with introducing flickering through out the movie. I didnt notice it that much on the DVD, on the BluRay it seems to stand out. At some points it just totally distracting, especially towards the end and really started to piss me off. Over all a satisfied customer, the movie is not worth the BluRay treatment though :).

^ I agree that the director's intention to induce artificial flickering is the only downside of the BD and more towards the later part of the movie. Apart from few frames here and there, the quality is very good. The details in the picture are well retained. Ayan BD PQ was on a bit softer side and this one on the crisper side. As Sunny discussed earlier, the tremendous amount of work done on the encode pretty much shows off in the BD PQ.

The 5.1 DTS-HD MA audio track has enough oomph to be mistaken for a 24-Bit track even though its only 16-Bit. The channels are mixed very well together and is the loudest of all the Ayngaran BDs out there in the market. It has good depth and the clarity is also excellent. Depending on the taste of depth not everyone will like the loud track. But the majority of the people I feel will enjoy the shattering experience in their HT.

Definitely worth the buy if you like the movie. I am hoping that forthcoming Aadhavan BD will be of similar crisp quality (I like it crisp but others might not). I am not concerned about Unnaipol Oruvan BD though as it was captured using RED.
