what do you mean DVD is out? is it any different from sony?

means the dvd is released in India.
I wouldn't know if the SPHE (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) dvd in India is any different from the Sony dvd in R1.

Okay that is fair enough. I am not asking for screenshots. But can someone confirm if that particular scene is in the DVD?

are you sure it was screened in the theatrical version? the dvd has a shot which zooms up above his waist level the moment he "un-towels" - so you get to see nothing butt-y ;-)

btw I am referring to the PAL dvd released by SPHE in India

Ali bhai, what's the runtime of the R1 NTSC dvd? Is it really R1 or R0?

.................

I did not watch this on the big screen -- but as I watch it on dvd, the movie grows on me -- I am liking it!

I don't think Sony BMG lock Indian dvds.

BTW, both Saawariya and Chhaliya (Raj Kapoor) are loosely based on Fyodor Dostoyevsky's short story White Nights.

In fact, Saawariya has quite a few nostalgic references to Raj Kapoor and his movies!

Watched the disc finally from start to finish. I like the film ok.
One can hate or love Bhansali, but he sure has high technical standards, and some of his visuals are world class.
As far as the HD mastering is concerned: THIS IS THE REFERENCE TO BEAT FOR QUITE SOME TIME!
Direct digital from the DI I have found nothing to complain about that is not already in all likelihood on the DI. It's as it should be, a high fidelity rendition of the master source.
EROS etc.: THAT'S HOW IT'S DONE! USE THE DI DIRECTLY!
If one has to bitch about something it's
- no song menu
- supplements are typical Bollywood pat on each other's back family reunion pow wow, not particularly insightful
- no director's commentary
- minor DNR smearing on Rani close-ups on the DI
The HD looks often breathtaking on a high contrast display. This is a dark film. The better your blacks the more impressive this looks, with endless depth and glowing colors, intricate detail and refined visual stimuli. It's galaxies away from what you see on a average Bollywood DVD and even the best DVDs completely pale in comparison. This disc can compete with the best Hollywood releases. An early milestone for Bollywood on HD.
Now I WANT Devdas and Hum Dil... in this quality! PLEASE!
(It's unlikely though as these films had no DI and polishing them now to this level is expensive.)

Yes, the showing in UK cinema showed his full butt totally naked from a reasonable distance and for several seconds. I watched it in Boleyn Cinema East London UK. The edited version not only took out that scene but several affiliated scenes in which Ranbir is teasing with the towel and then finally drops it. I heard this scene was also uncensored in US cinemas. However all the pirate and original DVD prints of this film have it deleted. I don't think we ever going to see it again...

I think the Indian dvd does have the "towel tease" scenes, as you call them...

Even though not my fav film, I did pick up previously viewed Saawariya for $ 4, just for the DVD quality.

The towel scene discussed in this thread was in there but was cut short as compared to theatrical version. Still, it was too vulgar to our taste. Towel with light filtering thru is transparent enough and the length of the scene sure is vulgar. (Moreover, he has towel for the inside room camera, where no one is supposedly there, but is showing off to his front door neighbors. :? ) I don't mind brief nudity but tease like this and this long sure is not family viewing. I wish they deleted this scene all together.

With seamless branching we can have the G version (no towel shot), the PG version (short towel shot), the PG13 version (as is), the R version (uncut), and the password protected NC17 version (he turns around and faces the camera sans towel) all in one. :D

Technically it's possible (don't know about password protection). And please, films are not made for males only. :)
