It should be Sony Pictures / Columbia for Canada & USA and will be region one locked.

The DVD for India should be handled by the Sony Home Entertainment India

The DVD for the UK will be a PAL DVD by Columbia Tri Star (Sony company)

I'm sure all three DVDs will be region locked.

I doubt it's coming out that soon. Especially if released by Sony. I would expect the window of time to be at least 2/3 months, so will probably be a while. Having said that if it comes out on Blu Ray before then, then I shall be buying it!!!

I don't think Sony BMG lock Indian dvds.

BTW, both Saawariya and Chhaliya (Raj Kapoor) are loosely based on Fyodor Dostoyevsky's short story White Nights.

India weekly still has this down for a release last week! I hate when they just post up a release date then don't update it even when it's gone past that date. :(

I'm guessing now it wont come out until the new year now.

I agree.. I hate the way India Weekly adds fault dates to nearly every DVD they list as coming soon.

My guess is the DVD should release in Jan 08 along with Om Shanti Om by Eros.

Saawariya Announced for Blu-ray

Posted December 31, 2007 by Josh

Sony Pictures Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Saawariya' to Blu-ray on March 11th, day-and-date with the DVD release. It will be presented in 2.40 1080p and in its original Hindi soundtrack. The only extra announced for the release so far is a "Making of the Music" TV special.

In the tradition of international co-productions like "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon", this film is the highly anticipated first release by Sony Pictures of the traditional and widely popular Indian "Bollywood" genre. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's epic romance "Saawariya" (Beloved) is a tender and romantic musical which centres around the chance encounter of two people Raj and Sakina and their obsession with each other over four successive nights. "Saawariya" is a contemporary story about the immortal emotion - love, with the unmistakable imprint of director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The film will have unprecendented wide releases in major countries outside of India.

Thanks, that's great news and we know they will make a good job of the blu ray, so it will be a must buy for sure.
Damm shame its in March though and not the rumoured (much touted) January 8th date though.

Saawariya was torture for me to watch (the wife made me go to the theatre), there is no way I'm spending money to buy the Blu Ray edition of this movie!

Bollywood Comes to Blu-ray with 'Saawariya'
Thu Jan 03, 2008 at 09:00 AM ET

The first-ever Bollywood film to be produced and released by a Hollywood studio is headed to high-def, with Sony announcing a March Blu-ray debut for the epic musical 'Saawariya.'

Inspired by Fyodor Dostoevsky's short story, "White Nights," 'Saawariya' tells the tale of a chance encounter between two lovers, and a subsequent obsession that spans four successive nights of music and fantasy. Sony will debut the first-ever film from producer-director Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Blu-ray March 11, 2008, day-and-date with the standard DVD.

Announced supplements are slim, with both versions sharing only a single TV special, "The Making of the Music."

Sony will present 'Saawariya' in 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video, as well as with English and Hindi 5.1 surround options (exact audio format is still TBA).

The studio has set a suggested list price of 38.99 for the Blu-ray.

You'll find preliminary disc details for 'Saawariya' linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule, where it's indexed under March 11, 2008.

We've also set up a dedicated thread for the bow of Bollywood on high-def in our Forums area -- click the following link to discuss the 'Saawariya' Blu-ray release.
