There has been no choice of one over the other. BR has more capacity and higher bandwith. Also more copy protection once BD+ is implemented. But for now it costs also more to make BD50s.

I have the first reel of DCH HD 1080p MPEG2 test stream 'in my hands' right now... :D

post/upload a sample

I'll upload some stills sometime.

1) Should I get a HD DVD PLAYER and get a HDMI input DVI output cable to connect it to my TV?
I found this HD DVD at Amazon.
but what is the difference between HD-A1, HD-A2, HD-XA1, and HD-XA2 beside the price difference of almost $500.

Before you decide which HD format to buy, check out what movies are already available in each format and what are coming soon on Amazon. If you do that, I am sure you will buy Blu-Ray.

If you decide on Blu-Ray and budget is no issue than buy a player that can upconvert standard DVDs. If you like gaming get PS3(60GB). It is an excellent Blu-Ray player as well and you can even connect to internet with WiFi and watch movie trailers in HD. You might even be able to watch the adult content you seem to be interested in :D .

I personally went with both formats as there will always be few movies in HD-DVD that I will want to watch plus the Toshiba HD-DVD Players are excellent upconverting players for SD-DVD. I am currently using HD-DVD player mostly as DVD Player and PS3 for Blu-Ray.

Looking forward for DCH HD-DVD.

Sony just announced a new BD player for summer for $599, that will street for less and will upconvert too!

Imho, still 20GB PS3 is more valuable as BD player. as I see humungus potential untapped for ps3 console.

I use an outboard upscaling dvd changer from yamaha for my dvd upconversion that plays pal, divx, is region free and have DCDI processing that helps me a lot to upscale/play back decently crappy indian dvds through HDMI.

So for HD DVD I am down to xbox 360 add on, that has terrific picture through component currently, but sucky sound quality( waiting for firmware upgrade). I did try HD A2 and did not like much sound quality through HDMI/COMPRESSED or UN COMPRESSED either!

PS3 sounds phenomenal!! Imho, bad sound with good picture is half fun.
Ps3 also plays SACD and CDs while sony's $1200 player does not, and also, dont have HDMI 1.3 and no high def audio decoders

as kits said!! BR are way ahead in software movies, minus universal, and disney exclusive!
Their sales/promotions are helping the format a lot.

On hardware there are more players, LG, Sony, Samsung, Sharp, Pioneer etc so, competition will bring better players out soon, and prices down.

Unfortunately I only see MS and Toshiba on the other sides! and Toshiba is depending upon cheapo chinese brands to give them price advantage!

Thank You guys for trying to help me out. To be honest I don't think I understand half of these stuffs. Mhafner, thank you for going into detail, but I don't know if my TV supports HDCP. All I know is it has a DVI input, and I was told by SAMSUNG (TV COMPANY) that I could buy a HD DVD PLAYER and hook it up via HDMI to DVI cable. They told me that since tv has a DVI INPUT I Need to hook up the AUDIO cables to hear anything.

I don't play Video games at all, last time I played was couple of years ago when I bought a brand new xbox. so PS3 is out of the equation. I wonder if these XBOX, PS, and PS2 will work in India so I can make some kid happy.

Kits, thank you very much for explaining it in a little bit easier way. I will probably buy the TOSHIBA HD-A2 DVD player because of the price, or I may end up buying the SONY HDMI UPCONVERSION FIVE DISK DVD PLAYER until the war is over between HD-DVD and BR.

BTW, PORN is restricted to my computer dvd drive, so i really don't care which player it plays as long as it plays on my lap top :)

You can find the HDMI to DVI cable and the audio cable at monoprice.com. You can't beat their prices and their quality is excellent. For audio you can use either a coaxial or optical cable.

Why are will still just waiting for DCH though?

surely there should be news/rumblings etc of other films by now?
The format has been on the market for a good few months now.

Market is still small for HD discs. Some Hollywood discs sell less than 1000! Mastering is expensive. Whoever releases Bollywood now accepts a loss for now.

Someone claiming to have got & ripped the HD-DVD of DCH;

http://www.bwtorrents.com/showthread.php?t=104123

Looks a bit poor for a HD-DVD rip (looks more like a upscaled DVD).

I agree!! TA RA RUM looked way better even, as it was upscaled!

But who knows? that this should be the bottom line HD DVD STANDARD for INDIAN DVDS, both HD and BR...i.e simply PATHETIC!

Crap rules!

I'm checking it out. There is no HD-DVD of DCH so far. Not even a finished HD master. If this is genuine it's likely an inside job from the mastering house.

This so called HD-DVD doesn't look genuine. Std DCH DVDs all (as far as I recall) have been field averaged and this HD video clip has the same field averaged look. Most likely, it's upscaled version of original field averaged NTSC crap.

Unless it has original distinct 24 frames per sec of the orig film, I don't consider it HD. On the same note, I'll take std Progressive NTSC DVD (480P) or direct film to PAL (Progressive) over 1080i upscaled video.
