Guys,

Which movies do you plan to buy again in the HD format (whichever!)?
and what are you going to do with your old dvds? keep them? give them away? throw them away?

Personally I have some movies that I bought 2/3 times already in DVD cos of different quality/editions. I'll probably keep those and also buy the HD version. But the majority of my DVDs I don't watch now anyway, so don't need to upgrade.

Movies like Devdas, Hum Dil Dey Chucke Sanam, Sholay are must have HD Dvds for me. As was Terminator 2, but I read the HD version isn't that good so will wait till the ultimate HD version comes out!

Nothing right now till either one format becomes the standard, or a dual format HD DVD player comes out for $299-$399 by Samsung or LG..

Even though Sony will begin to sell and HD player for $599 soon that is too much to pay for an HD DVD player that will only play one HD format like the Toshiba HD player.

HD DVD is nice, but currently not worth spending $$$ to add it to my HD TV.

I wouldn't discard your DVDs yet, nor would I begin to purchase any HD formats. DVDs have cornered the home video market across the globe. It has taken ten years (and $ billions) to reach that capacity. Majority of consumers who have invested in this format would prefer for it to remain stable until they themselves are ready to upgrade. HD doesn't present any “major” cause to upgrade from DVD, the way DVD did with VHS. Therefore, its crossover towards the consumer market will be difficult and challenging. The whole issue of “Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD” or “limited HDTV broadcasts in Europe” doesn't help matters either.

If HD does succeed into the consumers market, then all the current HD-DVD/Blu-Ray titles will be slowly deleted and re-done in better quality (or released with new “exclusive” extras). Right now many websites are praising the HD quality. However, I know that the work done on these titles are not as good as they could be. The whole HD technology (from negative transfer - disc encoding - monitor displays) are not being fully utilised. That will take the whole HD technicians and market a good three years to reach. I would wait until then and avoid double dipping (unless you can avoid it).

I do admire the quality potential of the HD formats...but at present I’m very comfortable with the quality of DVD (even when it is displayed back on my 50inch plasma screen).

I don't believe in waiting as when u get there, there will be something better on the horizon. If you can afford it, JUST GET IT. Of course, it makes sense to buy only if you have a TV bigger than 50-60".

I feel so spoiled with 2-3 weeks of watching Blu-Ray and HD-DVD on my new front projector that I am not even going to rent English SD-DVD as I have plenty of movies to catch up on Blu-Ray and HD-DVD and then our Desi movies on DVD.

buying a 50" tv or bigger is a waste of money and power consumption.
Most people dont even have the proper space/lighting/equipment to support it. Need i mention money. Its like a child saying they want the same toy as their neighbour or better.
the appetite just grows n grows.

I don't see HD-DVD or Blu-Ray taking over the DVD market for at least a couple of years. As was said, DVDs are a huge industry, and "high defintion" is just beginning to gain acceptance. Most people still own "standard" television sets (be they C.R.T.s or flat-screens) and DVD players incapable of, themselves, "up-converting." People have spent about a decade building their DVD collections, as well, and though they'll surely "do it all over again" (as they did with their VHS collections) when the time comes, I just don't see them leaping all over HD-DVD or Blu-Ray right now. Add to that that most "new-gen." discs come "bare bones," as did most 1st-generation DVDs, and there's even less incentive to make the transition. Most computers, right now, as well, come with DVD-burners as the "maximum" option. Also, "format wars" never seem to bode well for industries, and, unless one picks up a strong and early lead (as VHS did against Beta), two will probably compete as long as they exist, and always command only a somewhat small share of the total market. Of course, I could be wrong about all this, and December, 2007 could see every little boy and little girl getting a "multi-format next-gen. player" under his or her Christmas tree, but I just don't see that happening.

Get a 1080p projector and project LARGE. (2-3m or more). Then you see what HD can do.

Well I'm for one is sticking to this format. I have got thousands of dollars wasted on it already. How can we be assured that we are not gonna get the same pains, after all this is still in the infancy stage. I don't know, but perhaps " time bomb media " is in store for us? besides I have yet to see this format really excelled over a good encoded DVD!
