REVIEW SUMMARY
Like "Baran" from Iran and "Osama" from Afghanistan, Maryam Shahriar's Iranian film is about an adolescent girl who must disguise herself as a boy in order to survive. Aman, played almost wordlessly by Altinay Ghelich Taghami, has her head shaved by her father and is banished from her village, sent to a neighboring settlement to work as a supervisor for a cruel rug manufacturer. Both blunt in its social observations (unmarried woman have a hard time of it in Muslim society) and enigmatic in its plotting (does the girl who feels attracted to Aman realize she is a woman or not?), the film is staged as a series of nearly motionless tableaus that force the viewer to share Aman's sense of imprisonment.
