A Classic in its own right, Milan a movie released in 1967, and was nominated for 9 Filmfare awards. It went on to win 3 of them eventually which included :- Jamuna - Best supporting actress ; Laxmikant-Pyarelal - Best Music director .

Film Synopsis :- MILAN is the story of Radha (Nutan), the lovely daughter of a rich zamindaar who is transported across the river, everyday, by a young boatman named Gopi(Sunil Dutt). As fate would have destined they fall in love. However a prejudiced society looks down upon this relationshop and Radha is forced to marry someone else ( no marks for guessing whom). However he husband turns out to be a leech and a person involved in debauchery.....What happens next ? Do the lovers, Gopi and Radha meet in any way ?....

This film is based on the concept of reincarnation and many years later another film was made on similar lines ( MEHBOOBA - Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini)... This film however can be called a worthy successor of Madhumati ( which was again based on reincarnation). Strong performances by Sunil Dutt and the evergreen song "Saawan Ka Mahina pawan kare Sor !" make this film a classic even till todate.

DVD Video :- The transfer seems to have been made from an original film source, as the film was released under the PRASAD productions banner and PRASAD DIGITAL VIDEO have authored this DVD. This film transfer is a mixed bag. While color contrasts can be vividly seen , coupled with proper visualization of dark scenes, not enough care seems to have been taken for proper delivery of sequences involving motion. Thus this film suffers from excessive motion artifacts (the so called effect of DVNR ). Wear and Tear in the film are present but they do not cause any noticeable distraction while viewing. Sharpness also varies and this should have been taken into consideration also while transferring the film into an digital format. This film has an avg bit rate of 5-6 MBPs. Hence taking these factors into consideration I would give this film a Rating :- 7.0/10

DVD Audio :- The usual con game applied at YRF seems to be the norm of the day. Using a MONO sound and panning it to 6 channels and then calling it a DD 5.1 audio literally translates into duping the audience. No changes have been made in this regard. PDV should take a look into this seriously as presenting it in its original audio format would have been better. However this audio does not have and noticeable distortions present and thus I would like to give it a Rating :- 5.5/10 ( Bad boy PDV ...u dont learn from mistakes..CON GAME still on )

DVD Design :- No Chapter inlay card ! .No extras pertaining to the film. However this DVD has a section pertaining to forthcoming releases ( which is interesting as you can get a glimpse of the films which they are planning to release). A perpetual non skippable intro ( which contains a catalogue of YRF films on DVD, followed by the DDLJ DVD as and then the K3G trailer). My Rating :- 3.5/10

As this film is a classic and due to the mixed bag features present in the DVD, I wouldnt strongly recommend this DVD. However if you happen to be a MUKESH or Sunil Dutt / Nutan buff, then this DVD is a must for your collection. Overall Rating :-6.0/10

I am not too impressed with the YRF DVDs authored by PRASAD DIGITAL. May be they are better than Super Digital authored DVDs, I don't know as I don't have too many of those.

Milan, Ek Duje Ke Liye, Aadmi Aur Insaan, Pati Patni Aur Woh, Khilona etc. all have double images in single frames. The video is not to DVD quality in sharpness. The video is soft. Perhaps averaged frames (as Michael calls them) but then why do we see double image (motion scenes) instead of blurring? I doubt very much if these are mastered in Film mode. These Prasad DVDs are no match to Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai, which was from Film source.

For Film (24 frames per second) sourced DVD, we should get 24 distinct video frames, whether displayed 24 times, 30 times, 50 times, or 60 times per second. There is no double image in film frames.

Why do we see double image? Is it due to interlaced source or is it interlaced content? Or, may be it is due to unsuccessful attempt at creating a progressive DVD from an interlaced source where the progressive video frames have been created, or displayed, out of two different Film frames (i.e. video frames out of sync from film frames)??

If I remember correctly, Ali mentioned that EROS's APRADH is from interlaced source and yet it has very sharp picture and there are no double images (only some minor blurring as in DEI titles)

I wonder if Michael Hafner (mhafner) or someone else could try to clarify the reason for double image and for blurring.

Ali what sayeth you abt the presence of Double images in One frame...Does that mean that this is an interlaced source ? or a Progressive source ?
