Hi folks,

I have a review for the B4U DVD of Sholay upcoming over at DVD Times and wondered if anyone could help me out with some information about the 204 minute cut of the film that I'm not 100% clear on:

Do the original 35mm or 70mm negatives for the director's cut still exist? If so or if not, from which source did Eros use for their B4U DVD? To me, the quality is so poor, it seems to be from a video master that could've been the same one used for the TV broadcast back in 1990.

Any help appreciated. :)

I used to have both, but at the end of the day DEI version was BETTER, esp with remastered Dolby Surround! :P

Hi - Does anyone know if it's still possible to order the director's cut of Sholay (B4U version) anywhere on-line? I've searched everywhere and can't seem to find it. Even though it's only 6 minutes, I'm dying to see the extra footage.

I bought the Sholay DVD from them a couple of years ago and got the DEI version. So I just assumed they only sold this version. But looking closer at their box art, it does show the B4U logo. Maybe they have started selling this version now. I sent an e-mail to their customer service asking them to confirm.

Thanks for your help!

The 204-minute version is available at erosentertainment.com - the artwork does not seem to say B4U - just Eros...

Well, this was a pleasant surprise. After so many duff Hindi DVD releases from Europe, here comes a new Sholay DVD from France with a brand-new, remastered anamorphic PAL transfer! And a damn good one at that. Not perfect (it's a little grainy and colour/contrast levels could be better), but it's by far the best Sholay has ever looked on DVD. The film is split over two discs, so the bitrate is always quite high.

The only real negatives are, firstly, some blurring as a result of DNR, but it's still nowhere near as bad as some DEI discs have been with this problem. Also, the sound is disappointing since it's only mono 1.0 Dolby Digital and sounds rather hollow, but is otherwise free from any distortion. And lasty, as expected, there are no English subtitles though thankfully the French subs are removable unlike on Diaphana's Devdas DVD.

There's a couple of great extras on disc two - the superb 'Follow That Star' documentary on Amitabh Bachchan from the UK's Channel 4 filmed back in '89. It's a 50-minute piece very similar in style to 'The Inner World of Shah Rukh Khan' (both were directed by Nasreen Munni Kabir). There's also a 7-minute interview with Ramesh Sippy, also from Channel 4, that was likely screened before the TV showing of the film in Britain.

Looks decent. Never thought there would be a good version of this movie.

I take it that this is the original cut of the film?
