Though I, too, haven't seen the film in several months, that was exactly my ascertainment of Lallan's character: he was sinister and villainous. This was not a compassionate charcter, and I think that Abhishek brought him across very well. He didn't make any efforts to try to sanitize the character; he simply played the part as it should have been played. The audience was not necessarily supposed to feel "sorry" for Lallan, yet — through Abhishek's work — it was certainly able to understand him as a character.

Ratnam surely gets the best of his actor's, having said that, my favourite performance from Yuva has to be Ajay Devgan's, Michael Mukherjee was the only progressive moving character within the context of the film, and it left me wanting to see an entire film revolving around his ambitions. Lallan, while viciously portrayed, ultmiately leaves a very little to nothing effect on me as far as the film's importance is concerned.

I agree, Re Abhishek!

And I respect yours, Anwar-ji. I'd like to know what some of your favorite films of 2004 were. Look forward to hearing what you have to say. :)

SWADES, RAINCOAT & MEENAXI are my absolute favorites of 2004.
Films I enjoyed were: YUVA, CHAMELI, PHIR MILENGE, EK HASINA THI, HUM TUM, NAACH, MASTI, AB TAK CHHAPPAN & STOP!. You can say I didn't like the rest (very much).
I haven't seen MAQBOOL and HYDERABAD BLUES 2 yet.

What are your favorite films of 2004?

I loved "Swades," I loved "Raincoat," and I've never seen "Meenaxi." I loved "Yuva," was quite fond of "Chameli," loved "Phir Milenge," liked "Ek Hasina Thi," really liked "Hum Tum," rather disliked "Naach," somewhat liked "Masti," loved "Ab Tak Chhappan," and liked "Stop!" I, too, have not yet seen "Maqbool," and I more or less hated "Hyderbad Blues 2" (I never saw the first one...and now I'm not so sure that I want to).

My favorites (in no particular order) were, "Khakee," "Dev," "Raincoat," "Main Hoon Na," "Lakshya," "Ab Tak Chhappan," "Hum Tum," "Phir Milenge," "Vaastu Shastra," "Yuva," "Swades," "Deewaar," "Aetbaar" (that's right), and probably several more that I just can't bring into memory right now. 8)

Hey, let's expand this topic a bit: who do you think is the worst actor (or one of the worst actors) currently in the industry. One of my votes go to Fardeen Khan  .

Though I maintain that Fardeen Khan is indeed worse than Zayed Khan, I agree that the latter is far from what one might want to call "an actor." I feel that he was acceptable in "Main Hoon Na" and OK in "Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne," but it was all downhill (or, "fell off a cliff") from there. Though I haven't seen "Dus" yet, I can safely say that he took his profession to new lows in "Shabd" and "Vaada." "Hey, I suck, but people really seem to like Shah Rukh Khan. My last name is Khan. I got it! I can just be Shah Rukh. Hell, I'm a third of the way there." I guess he just stood in front of his mirror, reciting lines until he felt he sounded befuddled enough to deliver them.

Fardeen is a sissy shit! It took, may be 16 or more years to get siss out of Saif! took, 10 years to get stink out of karisma, and pooh still stinks :(

I didn't read a majority of this thread, but IMHO Abhishek Bachchan is one of the best new leading actors! Infact, he is probably THE best! He's got an icredible screen presence, which has nothing to do with his daddy being the dada of hindi cinema!

I haven't seen the parata Yuva, but I have seen the dosa one. I hear the dosa one is better. Ajay Devgan is too old to be playing Surya's (incredible actor BTW) role, or any role in this film especially titled "Yuva". lol Madhavan did really well, it was hard to hate his ambiguous character, damn you ratnam! :) Sidharth was also good. I can see Sidharth & Vivek, Madhavan & Abhishek, but I can't see Surya & Ajay!

anyway, enjoy your hrithik roshans, john abrahams, arjun rampals :P

Yes, Ajay is a good actor. I was just trying to say that he doesn't suit the role well. It's kind of like watching Vijaykanth or even Rajnikanth dancing with 16 y/o girls  ok ok, thats a bit extreme, but you get the idea ;)

I only saw Zayed in Main Hoon Naa, and he was horrible, it had a lot to do with his dialogues. He'll probably improve as he matures over the years, if he lasts that long. I don't think he will ever be an SRK, he can try though :P

Agreed about Fardeen (have you seen his idiotic act in the trailers of his upcoming Ek Khiladi Ek Hasina? Damn.). Saif Ali Khan did, indeed, take a while to air out, and he's still far from stellar (though he is getting some slightly-undue praise, these days). Karishma went from OK to bad (similar phenomenon to Salman Khan, huh?). I take it that "pooh" is Kareena Kapoor, and OMG. She was one of the worst things to ever happen to the Indian film industry. That said, since Dev, she's definitely taken strides forward.

LOL, for sure..Zayed sucks! Heck, all he has to do now is wear those chic fancy shirts like Srk, do a stuttering schtick, write Karan Johar’s name on his chest, and he will make Srk’s grade. I have to see what you mean when I view ‘Vaada,’ which I just bought on a whim…not expecting much, except to listen to good music.

What do you think of Tusshar?—his ‘so-called’ acting is generally pretty much a thumbs down to the pits of hell (apart from ‘Khakee,’ which is one of Tusshar’s best roles). Otherwise, only thing I like about him is his fantastic dancing! (ie: “Ding Dong’ song from ‘Kucch To Hai’ with Natasha (?) rocks)!

Pav--have to agree, Ajay Devgan is a great actor! (old is gold). I really like his screen presence and expressions, especially in "Deewangee!' 8)

I agree pretty much word-for-word with what you've said about Zayed. For the most part, however, the agreement stops there. I think Tusshar is capable of some great work. I agree that he did a great job in Khakee (though he was, in large part, shadowed by Amitabh Bachchan [then again, who isn't?] and Akshay Kumar), but his talent was not apparent in just that film. I thought he did great work in Gayab, as well. (He was good in another film — the name of which I cannot, at the moment, bring to mind — too.) The now-excellent Ajay Devgan, not long ago, made me want to burn down the Hindi film industry. Only since Deewangee (or maybe since The Legend of Bhagat Singh), has Devgan been a pleasure to watch. Even then, he did repulsive work in Parwana.

LOL Pav, def it would not be a pretty sight to see an old dude like Ajay romancing a 20 year old young chick. (*Cringe*)

obviously you haven't watched 'south' films! disgusting. just visit indiaglitz, and look at the stills for half the films. lmao

watch Zakhm! Mahesh Bhatts & Ajay Devgans best film, from what I can recollect. I liked this movie very much. Nice way for M.Bhatt to step off the directors chair!

Ajay Devgan is an excellent actor in my opinion. He emotes through his eyes. Though I only liked him since HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM and ZAKHM. Unfortunately I think he's getting (and accepts) only roles below his level nowadays. The only good recent film that I can recall is RAINCOAT. Liked him also very much in THE LEGEND OF BHAGAT SINGH, COMPANY, BHOOT, LAJJA and DEEWANGEE.

Arjun Rampal is imho one of those few model-turned-actors who can actually act. I think he did really well in MOKSHA, AANKHEN and TEHZEEB. I think he has this amazing comic timing (TEHZEEB). He was cool in VAADA also, although I didn't like that film. On the flipside, I think he disappoints in DIL KA RISHTA and DIL HAI TUMHARA. But then, these films were written so badly, that I couldn't blame Arjun for it. He also does a lot of films I do not wanna see, like almost all his films I didn't mention here.

Fardeen Khan isn't a bad actor imho. He was decent in PYAAR TUNE KYA KIYA and BHOOT (haven't seen JUNGLE). In his other films I have seen his performance is not mentionable I think. But I think he has potential.

Zayed Khan is just bad. He doesn't act, but tries to. The result is often really funny. When is saw CHURA LIYA HAI TUMNE, I thought: "ok, first time, maybe he will learn no act" but I soon lost all hope after watching MAIN HOON NA, VAADA and SHABD.

Tusshar... well, I saw him first in MUJHE KUCCH KEHNA HAI, KYAA DIL NE KAHA and JEENA SIRF MERRE LIYE, and I thought: "where is his SHAME!?!?". I thought he really made a fool of himself and he was the worst actor EVER! Than I saw KHAKEE, in which he didn't impress me either but his performance was a lot better (and restrained) than in the previous three mentioned films. I think he was perfect cast in GAYAB, but that was because he looks and talks like a nerd in real life also like the character was supposed to do. Have no hope for him left either.

Yea Pav, I’m a novice to ‘south’ films,--I intend to watch a few Tamil films soon to expand my repertoire, but after glancing at the Indiaglitz stills, well, now I have second thoughts?…

Well....my advise....if you're not a southie don't watch southie movies. ;)
