What God Father is for hollywood is Nayagan for indian movies. Although Mani set the stage for Nayagan in his first directional venture, Pagal Nilavu, this is considered "The God Father" of Indian cinema, because of the way this was executed and ground breaking performance by Kamal (now people may call overacting, similar to what they call for Sivaji, but at that time his active was greately appreciated by many critics).

In an recent interview with Kamal, they asked when he is going to join hands with mani again and he said, both Mani and himself set Nayagan as an example and they both wanted something better than nayagan to justify doing films again, so they are going to wait until the subject matter comes to them. Hmm...

I agree Nayagan is a very good movie, but there is no way it can match ( other than popular opinion) the following Indian flicks

- Jalsaghar
- Charulata
- Meghe Dhaka Tara ( Cloud Capped Star)
- Subarnarekha

Also missing from the list is

- Seven Samurai
- Wild Strawberries
- 2001 Space odyssey
- Vertigo

They included Finding Nemo and Drunken Master - WTF . I know its tough to compile a list , but this one is definitely not the best/complete. What intrigues me is how "Nayagan" made it to the list, I have never seen Nayagan listed in any other Top 100 film list - curious indeed. Hmmm…,think I must

I love Nayagan very much, but the comparison stands only so far - Godfather was original while Nayagan is inspired by Godfather. A great movie never the less. One of my favorite Mani movies

Probably made it based on Mani's reputation. Not a bad way to honor one of the best Indian directors around

More than Nayagan, Thevar Magan was inspired by God Father (II). Infact to me, I would add Thevar Magan instead of Nayagan. Thevar Magan to me is the best executed Tamil movie so far.

I'm not a big fan of lists like these that rank films. I'd rather see a list of 100 films you must see but probably haven't, in no particular order.

This was not a very good list, though I totally agree the Apu Trilogy should be there. Nayakan was very good and I'm surprised it was on there as it tends to be forgotten.

Pyaasa was one of the best films to come out of India and probably deservedly got it's place there, though I'm unsure if this was better than Kaagaz Ke Phool, though maybe so.

The Indian film industry should be glad that at least their best films are being recognised in the world. I wish they would make films like these today, but I don't think the directors are talented enough as Guru Dutt.

Drunken Master 2!! Are they mad? There are many better kung fu films than this!

Where was Seven Samurai and Shawshank Redemption?

I would definitely add Vishwa Thulasi to this list. I watched the movie (probably the only movie I watched in many years with out forwarding any scenes/songs) and I have only one word to describe it. Poem.
