The film industry may be going through a turbulent phase with the biggest of films biting the dust, but all is not lost.

The exhibition sector, which has been badly hit thanks to low occupancy levels since the past few months, has started picking up the threads and placed its bets on three major April releases to do the trick - LUCKY [8th], WAQT [22nd] and KAAL [29th].

Reportedly, the [advances] terms being offered to screen these three films, by various exhibitors across the country, indicates the trust that the exhibitors have in the makers and these projects. Let's hope that the three biggies bail the industry out from the current crisis and change the mood from morose to joyful.

Well, first of the three releases, Lucky got lucky, as it seems to have hit the marquee.
BTW, only 1 of 7 zulmi voters had voted for Lucky.

First day First show reactions to Lucky - No Time For Love

By IndiaFM News Bureau, April 8th, 2005 - 2000 hrs IST

A Sohail Khan -T Series production, lead actor as Salman Khan, a much in news actress, chartbusting music, this one’s a biggie! So what does the Friday report say? If you are to talk numbers, the booking chart isn’t very encouraging. But wait…don’t let the figures cheat you, because people coming out of theatres have quite enjoyed their 3 hours of popcorn.

The love story has seemingly worked with the audiences. People have loved the scenic locales of Petersberg, Moscow where the film has been extensively shot. “Pachas rupai mein Russia dekhne mila, aur kya chahiye” quipped a guy. Adnan Sami’s music too has brought itself a lot of praise. Unlike only a single hit, audiences like the whole album, favorites range from Sun zara, Chori chori & Lucky lips.

Since it is Lucky we are talking, debutant Sneha Ullal need not fret. Moviegoers have loved the light-eyed actor. And contrary to what media has been going on for days, audiences don’t think she is an Ash look alike. “I don’t think she is an Ash copy, yes she does have a passing resemblance, but that’s about it” a guy surprised us.

Popular opinion votes Sneha as a great looker, but ask them to rate the 18 year old’s acting skills and they are not too sure. Her dialogue delivery has come into for some tips from the ticket-buyers. Looks pretty, is charming, can improve on her acting, seems to be the chorus. Now for the toast of the hour, Salman Khan. The star seems to have given people their ticket’s worth. Die-hard loyalists are more than happy with his character of Aditya. The junta is with him all the way. Salman seems to have nailed this one!

Finally let’s leave you with what a couple told us, “The film is going to be Lucky for Salman!”

Lucky is playing at traditional desi theatre Albion & Woodside in Toronto.

It's also playing at "Big Screen Big Sound" Dolby Digital theatres Capital Square in Toronto and Méga-Plex Sphèretech 14 in Montreal. No shows in Ottawa.

Worth a drive to see it in a decent DD theatre for its sweet music.

Ash Lite's better than the real thing!

Raja Sen | April 08, 2005 19:34 IST

Toss aside the bewildering (no time for love) tagline, and Lucky is ready to roll. In fashion atypical to Bollywood, the film's title doesn't refer to its leading man. Or to its theme. And despite what obvious filmi traditions would have you believe, Lucky isn't even the name of our man Sallu's pet alsatian.

The truth is a lot more palatable as the schoolgirl shuffling awkwardly tells Salman Khan her painfully ironic name. "Lucky Negi," she whimpers, causing Mr Bicep to burst out laughing. After all, the lass has wrecked his life (not to mention his treasured Volkswagen Cabriolet) within minutes of meeting him, and the two are currently in the middle of disaster.

Still, he, and the rest of us, can't help begrudgingly throw Lucky a smile. Sneha Ullal's first shot on screen is guaranteed to bring forth a gasp. The resemblance to Aishwarya Rai is uncanny, and it's customary to require sharp intakes of breath.

Yet proportion must not be forgotten. Aishwarya is one of the most beautiful women in the country, while Sneha is, well, a very pretty schoolgirl. Playing what must essentially be herself, Ullal's done well for her first film.

Here is broken another Bollywood convention -- someone is actually playing their age! Shudder-provoking memories hark back to Manoj Kumar in khaki shorts, his attempt at playing a young high school student.

But this film is an almost unthinkable respite -- a 17 year old is cast exactly apropos. The result is that she seems almost too young, too childlike, too untouched. Which also ensures her coming across as too believable. And, most importantly, immensely hard to not like.

The Negi clan has just moved to Russia, and elder daughter Lucky is desperate to fit in. She is a shy little Indian girl, but harbours dreams of appropriately teenage naughtiness, and manages the obligatory dance sequence with her checked-skirt classmates.

One morning, after cramming hard for a test, she's all out of academic hope and praying something stops the examination. The Russian rapist leering big bad wolf-style in the woods when her bicycle has a flat tire, however, is not exactly what she was hoping for.

Therefore, she yelps, resists, slams bad guy in face with tiffin ka dabba and flees right to safety -- or the backseat of Aditya's (Salman) car, as you and I would call it. The Khan arrives, biffs baddie, and discovers, after a mild-mannered misunderstanding with border police, that he now has an extra responsibility.

Before he has time to react, gunfire and explosions punctuate the conversation, and young Aditya, son of the ambassador, realises he and his annoyingly coy co-passenger are in the middle of that most undesirable of situations, good only for out of work poets and composers big on violins: a Russian revolution.

It's been a while since we've seen Salman Khan relax in a role, but this is him acting with vintage -- the word is appropriate as he's too old for the part -- ease. He's affable and chilled as he laughs indulgently at his kid passenger, and his jokes aren't barbed -- they're petulantly mean and self-assured. The character is a winner, and Salman, fully clothed throughout this snowy celluloid romp, is positively charming.

Ash Lite is the one facing all the pressure, though, and she does quite all right, considering she's a teenager working in her first film, and has been handicapped by severely trite and saccharine dialogues. Mush is easy to flub and look bad in, and, while we won't earmark her for the next Shyam Benegal thing, it's important to appreciate she doesn't come across as annoying.

Which, in keeping with all the hype, leads us to believe in the child's potential and declare she's, well, even better than the real thing.

The second half of the film is, for the most part, a letdown, as our tragically trapped couple plod through all the predictable Hindi film pitfalls, with the script suddenly dragging, scarred by great dollops of melodrama.

Thankfully, Salman's constant irreverence is evident, and the film escapes being a total write-off. Setting it in the spectacular Russian landscape helps a lot.

Speaking of firsts, this also might be the only Mithun Chakraborty film in perhaps the last decade to actually merit the tag 'watchable.' The veteran star has suddenly been appearing a lot on the mainstream landscape (far removed from his B-film badshahdom), but he's enjoyable here, playing an eccentric 'great' detective and master of disguises.

Lucky is a rare film for Indian cinema. It's a teenage chick-flick, similar to the films churned out with great regularity by Disney -- wistfully dreaming fairytale princesses, breathtaking backdrops, a studly hero with unflinching ideals, simplistic characters, an inescapable feeling of sincerity despite cliché, a plot unencumbered by logic, and that romantic ideal so constantly exploited by yon studio with the rodent ears: a willing suspension of disbelief.

It's easy to laugh, easy to point fingers, and easy to deride Lucky -- you just might not want to.

I heard lucky and waqt are doing good, so the DVD release is postponed by a month.

From people who saw both
Waqt - Excellent
Lucky - Garbage

I have a feeling that Kaal is going to be another garbage. The music is a big flop already (started off well, but very slow now)

BTW what happened to Hrithik roshan? Any news about his next movie. I am not a fan of him, but couple of kids are his fan (after KMG) and they bug me every day. A new movie means a poster that I can make these kids be :D

Isn't it a surprise: Non-SRK bollywood movie making money in overseas market?

So far I see no reason for any interest in JBSN. May be the hype is missing, or may be I don't know something that others know and call it a Big Film??
BTW, and so was Gadar but became an all time hit. Numero Uno so far in Indian BO.

here is ur KAAL ka nikla dhamaal rana!
1st KAAL review FILM REVIEW: KAAL (2005)

Producer: Karan Johar, Shah Rukh Khan Director: Soham Shah Cast: Ajay Devgan, Esha Deol, Vivek Oberoi, Lara Dutta, John Abraham and Shah Rukh Khan

Radio Sargam Rating: 7/10

Synopsis: A series of killings have been taking place in Orbit National Park. Even tigers are being hunted down.

Krish Thapar (John Abraham taking on the name of India’s Tigerman (Valmik Thapar) is a tiger expert who loves playing with pythons more than his under covered photographer wife Riya (Esha Deol). He is assigned the task of finding out the truth.

Dev Malhotra (Vivek Oberoi) along with girlfriend Ishika (Lara Dutta) and two friends are also on their way to the park when they run over a black cat. Their vehicle breaks down and they hire another vehicle. Krish has his National Geographic jeep breakdown on the way and then he and Riya hop into Dev’s vehicle. They decide to spend the night at a guesthouse where the tourist guide is killed. Earlier Krish’s driver too is killed.

And soon they come face to face with tigers. Here comes Kaali Pratap Singh (Ajay Devgan) and the tigers run away when they see him. He saves their lives. But one of Dev’s friends who has gone out on a hunt is hunted down himself.

It’s time for these people to leave because the man in charge of the forest Khan (Parmeet Sethi) insists that they do because it starts raining and landslides could prevent them from doing anything. Scared and shocked, they decamp… and then there is a road block due to a landslide. And Kaali enters. Slowly, the number is down from six to four. But Kaali still lives…

Critique: The premise and a few scenes in the film have been heavily inspired by The Ghost and the Darkness. Frankly, there is a ghost and a lot of darkness in the movie. Jokes apart, Kaal uses sound and camerawork as crutches to move ahead from scene to scene. Dwarak Warrier, proves why he is India’s best guy in sound today with this film. Santosh Thundiyil’s camerawork is the invisible actor in the film who you cannot see, but who tells so many stories with just one movement. He caresses the screen with his work.

The first half is thrilling. A driving scene in which Vivek, Lara and their two friends are coming to the park is a bit of let down, but it is used to describe their characteristics and it does take a while.

Like in all ghost stories and thrillers, there is a bit of suspicion is every character that we see, so that suspicion is aroused. But at times, it gets too predictable.

The scene where one of the lead character is killed close to a well is so predictable that you know when she is walking back after drinking water, that the rope is going to pull her back into the water.

Vivek is his own usual over-confident self. He tries a little too hard at a romantic scene and one knows that Aishwarya Rai would not be too happy with his expressions, nor would Lara’s guy Kelly Dorji.

Ajay Devgan tries to change his voice and dialogue delivery for a while and then reverts to his original style all over again. A lot of inconsistency mars his ill-defined character which is quite flat even though he has a great entry scene.

John Abraham is very good in parts. His ironed hair and ironed expressions somehow are a little out of the jungle. But John’s eyes are very expressive. However he does not have much to do in this thriller.

SRK’s Kaal Dhamaal dance number with Malaika Arora in the beginning is a good thing for his fans, but not for the film. Ditto with the last song that appears during the end credits.

Frankly, Kaal is a Dhamaal for people who have come to watch the movie to see the stars. There is a lot of cleavage in the jungle, courtesy Esha Deol’s new wardrobe.

Lara has nothing much to do, but show her legs in a few scenes and scream at times. Even Esha does display any talent but her assets.

The scene where the survivors realise that it is a ghost which is doing the killing is interesting, but the fact that there is a ghost is a little too far fetched at a time when one has been watching the movie for man-eating tigers.

The three tigers in the film are lovely. The supporting cast is adequate. Vishal Malhotra as the scared friend of Vivek and Lara is good in a few scenes. A talent like Parmeet Sethi is wasted in the film in three scenes.

The film is an entertainer though.

Trivia: The park was earlier called Corbett National Park in the film too. But following protests, the name was changed to orbit national part. But in case you watch closely, some scenes shot on John’s laptop, suggests that the name’s Corbett National Park. Spoiler: Ajay Devgan is in reality the ghost of the man who was killed by the locals who felt that he was leading the tourists to their death. And after being thrown to a tiger to be eaten, Kaali turned into a ghost and became everyone’s Kaal

In our poll, majority predicted Kaal, that will revive Box Office.
Well, Lucky did OK, Waqt did even better. In Toronto Montreal Ottawa area, Waqt and Lucky made it to main stream theatres along with Albion-Woodside. (Waqt is starting in Ottawa AMC from today).
Kaal, the predicted Box Office sabvior, is showing only at our desi theatre Albion-Woodside.

It will be really funny if Waqt that got zero votes out scores the other two films. Let's watch and see.

---------------------

Arsh, doesn't your post give away the outcome of Kaal or is it open knowledge?? May be a spoiler warning will do the trick?? I like JB's trick that spoilers can't be read until you highlight them.
