What is important: satisfying one thousand desires or conquering just one? SAMSARA is a spiritual love story set in the majestic landscape of Ladakh, in the Himalayas, about one man's quest to find enlightenment. Tashi, a brilliant young disciple, is just completing three years of solitary meditation in a remote hermitage. Brought out of a deep trance, Tashi is taken back to his ancient monastery where he slowly recovers his strength, but his return has unexpected results. Despite a life devoted to the rigors of spiritual development, he finds himself experiencing a surprisingly profound sexual awakening. These feelings coincide with his journey to a village to perform a harvest blessing where he meets Pema, a beautiful young woman. For the first time, Tashi begins to question the spiritual values of his monastic existence, realizing that one has to experience worldly existence in order to renounce it. Through Tashi's eyes, this spiritual and moving love story chronicles one man's discovery of the promise of SAMSARA -- the world.

Samsara R1 DVD is not released yet.

Film seems to be catching up. It's showing in many Canadian cities, mostly in Art Cinemas and also in some Main Stream Cinemas. In Ottawa, it's 1 show daily at Bytown.

I wish ASOKA made it's way into Art Theatre circuit. ASOKA was released around 2001 and so was Samsara.

Looks like, it's going to be around for a while. From Art circuit, it will get into main stream.

There is one half page write up in the main stream news paper today, with glowing review and the film preview looks very interesting.

The film is in Laddakhi spoken language with English Sub_Titles.
-----------------------
Excerpts:

It took 7 yrs to make the Himalayan spiritual voyage- cum erotic love story.

Samsara was filmed in Ladakh, a remote area of India----

---Budhist calm that pervades the screen, at least untill people's clothes come off-----

---of its second half, which has the coflicts of a classical western: the honest farmers, the corruption of nearby civilization, the ex-monk who is instructed in the convolutions of Tantric Sex.

It is a beautiful looking film.

Caught this film in the last show.

It's a serious thought provoking film. We also get to see Laddakhi, Indian, Tibbetan culture as well. Tibbetan/ Laddakhi culture that we read in school text books, it was interesting to see it on film. It's mainly in Laddakhi with some dialogs in Hindi.
Indian connection is mainly for it's shooting location in Laddakh and behind the camera credits. Rest is all Laddakhi/ Tibbetan/ Lama monks culture.

Theatre is an old run down independent theatre (used to be tops) with huge capaciy, 1000 plus. In multiplexes rarely have I seen an attendance of 300 or more, but this show at 09:30 PM was over 600 (mostly non-south-asians). With such an attendance, I'm sure this film will be back.
