Got a few Eros 16X9 anamorphic DVD, Devdas, Taal and Kuch naa Kaho. They share the same problem, image is soft. Out of curiosity, I used a software called DVD Descrypter to open these DVDs. On the "Stream Processing" tab, the software shows "Video - 352X480(NTSC)/16:9" for all the three Eros' anamorphic DVDs. Then I tried a few DEI and Hollywood 16X9 anamorphic DVDs, they all shows "Video - 720X480(NTSC)/16:9". I did some research on Internet, DVD with 352X480 resolution is so-called 1/2 DVD, which has 1/2 resolution of a full DVD(720X480). I'm not an expert about DVD. But if I'm not wrong about Eros's 16X9 anamorphic DVD, I think they are actually 1/2 DVD. If Eros keeping using 352X480 to produce DVDs, how good can they be? No wonder why Eros's 16X9 anamorphic DVDs never look better than a decent non-anamorphic letterbox DVDs. If anyone likes to try other Eros 16X9 anamorphic DVDs, you can find the software on http://www.doom9.org/

This has always been the case with Eros DVDs. It's in the company policy to try their hardest to use the lowest quality material and sources for the DVDs. They actually pride themselves at it. I kid you not.

Thanks Chenyang for providing hard facts proving what I always said that Non Anamorphic Progressive DVDs are better than Anamorphic interlaced (half DVD) DVDs. Unfortunately and Mostly, just the word "Anamorphic" still sells.

(Of course, Anamorphic Progressive DVD is better than Non-Anamorphic Progressive DVD)

If you turn on the "Show Informaton" option of PowerDVD, PowerDVD will show a constant video bit rate around 4 Mbps while playing Eros's anamorphic DVD, because Eros's anamorphic DVD use 352*480 resolution and 4 Mbps bit rate is basically the maximum bit rate that a 1/2-DVD can go. However, even those 720X480 non-anamorphic DVDs can easily goes above 5 Mbps. Eros' 352X480 DVd is anamorphic indeed, you get 33/% improvement in vertical direction but lose 50% resolution in horizontal direction. For a wide screen movie, at the cost of 50% horizontal deduction, I don't see how much sense the 33/% vertical improvement can make.

I have REPEATEDLY SAID!! EROS PROG are ONE OF WORST LOOKING PROG, followed by RECENT AYANGRAN! PROG!

So, DEBATE , PROG is always BETTER!! is NOT TRUE for me!! I find some PSEUDO PROG much better than BADLY DONE PROG, e.g OLD AYANGRAN STUFF, VIDEO of SHAHENSHAH etc!

i remember just before the cinema showing of MAIN HOON NA and EROS had their self promo footage of how they have been serving the industry for 25 years and their state of the art facilities i shouted out very loudly that in this state of the art studio LULLA gets his cheap thrills by sticking his dick into the process of manufacturing 3rd rated dvds...i must say quite a few of the audience had a laugh and i was lucky not to be thrown out of the showing 8) 8) 8) 8)

Anyway, from now on, I'm not going to buy any other Eros's DVDs until they use standard 720*480 resolution to make DVDs.

Well, I have to revise the data in my previous posts. 352*480 resolution is showed in DVD Decrypter version 3.1.60 (IFO mode). The lastest DVD Decrypter version 3.2.20 shows 704*480.

The following is the data showed in DVD Decrypter version 3.2.20(File Mode)

Title: Taal (EROS)

Video Width: 704
Video Height: 480
Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Frame Rate: NTSC at 29.97 fps
Data Rate: 4200000 bps

Title: Kuch naa KAHO (EROS)

Video Width: 704
Video Height: 480
Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Frame Rate: NTSC at 29.97 fps
Data Rate: 4000000 bps

Title: Davdas (EROS)

Video Width: 704
Video Height: 480
Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Frame Rate: NTSC at 29.97 fps
Data Rate: 4200000 bps

Title: Dhaai Aksbar Prem Ke (DEI)
Video Width: 720
Video Height: 480
Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Frame Rate: NTSC at 29.97 fps
Data Rate: 9000000 bps

Title: Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai (DEI)
Video Width: 720
Video Height: 480
Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Frame Rate: NTSC at 29.97 fps
Data Rate: 9000000 bps

Two Hollywood DVDs:

Title: The Mummy Returns (Universal)
Video Width: 720
Video Height: 480
Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Frame Rate: NTSC at 29.97 fps
Data Rate: 9800000 bps

Title: Indiana Jones - The Temple of doom (Paramount)
Video Width: 720
Video Height: 480
Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Frame Rate: NTSC at 29.97 fps
Data Rate: 9800000 bps

Judged by above data, the Eros's DVDs use 704*480 resolution while DEI and Hollywood DVDs use standard 720*480 resolution. Eros DVD's Data Rate(Probably highest video bit rate) is about half of the Data Rate of DEI and Hollywood DVD. I think these data can basically explain why Eros's DVDs look soft. Again, I'm not an expert on DVDs. Anyone please feel free to correct me.

I checked the Devdas DVD I received from Eros and it has the same low resolution 352x480 and the average bit rate is also about half the normal rate, and it definitely looked inferior to other full resolution movies. I have a 150" screen and it clearly shows.
It is a shame that such a wonderful movie will be seen by people at less than the best quality possible.
It would not have cost them any more because they are giving two DVD's one of which has special features and their is enough empty space on the disks.
It shows complete disregard for quality on part of Eros.
However we do not have much choice as it appears they have exclusive rights.

There is choice. Go for Diaphana Devdas (French release).
