Anbe Sivam
BMD- Blue Mountain Digital

Image

Specifications

Video: 2.35:1 16:9 enhanced NTSC
Audio: DD 5.1 (448 kbps) and DTS 5.1 (754 kbps)
Subtitles: English, French, German, Italian, Malay, Portuguese, Spanish
Length: 160 minutes
Region: All

Video

The 16:9 enhanced 2.35:1 transfer looks quite nice. Colors look good and sharpness is decent, though it looks like the authors might have filtered it (low-pass?), since facial textures usually look smoothed over; having DD and DTS on both discs could be the reason. Some DNR artifacts are present, but I noticed little or no edge enhancement, and compression artifacts are minimal. It is pseudo-progressive. The cinematography of the film is excellent and rivals that of Hollywood productions.

The major problems with this release are a transparent text screen that pops up at the beginning of each song, listing the title, singers, music director, and lyricist. You can't turn this off. A BMD logo appears occasionally.
Audio

Both DD and DTS 5.1 soundtracks are included. Sound is well mixed and distortion free. I don't have a 5.1 system to fully judge the sound, but the mix seemed very nice. I haven't heard atmospheric and background sounds used this well in any Indian film.

Summary

I don't know how the BMD release compares to the Ayngaran release, since I haven't seen it, but I would bet that the transfers are similar. The video on the Ayngaran release probably has the upper hand because DD and DTS are on separate discs, and it does not have the text screen on the songs.

The Ayngaran transfer is pretty good. The movie is good too. The accident(train) scene was very well done.

The beginning of the movie was good. The interaction between Madhavan and Kamal was funny and I would have liked the film if it followed them traveling to Chennai, but a substantial portion of the film is the flashback to the Sivam-Bala story, which I thought bogged the film down and is not as enjoyable as the first part. Whenever Kamalhaasan writes a script and acts in the film he always gives himself maximum screen time and a young heroine. The more interesting Madhavan/Sivam story line is shortchanged. Ultimately the film was not nearly as emotionally involving as Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, which is the starting point for the story.

The performances are good, particularly Kamal as the disfigured Sivam. Vidyasagar has provided some good songs. Cinematography and editing are terrific. I can't imagine how they shot the song on top of the bus. It looks like it could have been inspired by Chaiyya Chaiyya. The execution of the "Naatukoru Seidhi" song is well done.

The accident scene was nicely done, though the shot of the decapitated head and body was too graphic for a U film.

I think Anbe Sivam is one of the top Indian films of 2003, dispite it being a part remake of Planes, Trains ad Automobiles. But its a Indian remake that works for a change.

The train scene was amazing. But what worked for me was the dark humour around it. Its the genius of Kamal Hassan screenplay and the performance of Mahdevan. It was a shame that the flashback was too contrived but it has its nice moments, particularly the interaction between Nasser and Kamal Hassan. Also it was nice to see an Indian heroine (Kiran) looking very natural for a change.
