Hello! I'm new here and I'm also relatively new to the world of Indian movies. I'm primarily into horror, sci-fi and action movies (typical guy, I suppose) and am seeking those types of Indian films on DVD.

So far I have seen Dharna Mana Hai (not bad), Bhoot (fairly decent, but could have withstood a lot of cuts), Samay (pretty good, but long and not very original), and Koi...Mil Gaya (I'll probably purchase it when the 2-disc SE comes out). From my understanding, Koi...Mil Gaya was more or less the first sci-fi Indian movie. Horror and action movies do not seem to be very big in India--compared to romances and comedies.

If anyone has any input on good horror, action and/or sci-fi Indian movies available on DVD please let me know! Thanks!

(Oh, and as a side note: is India Weekly a good place to purchase LEGITIMATE (i.e. not bootlegs) DVDs? Thanks again!)

Indiaweekly is a decent place to buy originals. Make sure you look for brand names such as DEI, and most new Yashraj for Hindi movies. For Tamil, I would also try themahal.com and buy Ayngaran brand. Most EROS DVDs by comparison are utter crap, and not worth it really. Search previous postings here to know what's good and what's bad. It'll pay off!!

As far as the 'hatke' genre movies-'Mr. India' w/ Anil Kapoor is a good sci-fi type movie. Then there is 'Bees saal Baad,' for horror which is considered a classic by many.

Horror Genre is shite in Mainstream Indian cinema at the mo. Your best bet is to turn to the low budget Ramsey Bros fims that have gained a massive cult following. Even better are the 1980 films from Pakistan :) But these are not avaliable on DVD as no major Indian distributor wish to be associated with these types films - they have been catergorised as X rated material. I find it odd as it as more of a niche market in the western hemisphere then standard Bollywood movies does :)

Even today countless of Indian horror movies are x rated with horror cross fertilising with sexual violence. There have been many sucessful movies with spin-offs and even sequels. Yet you won't find any of them outside the India. The only kind you will find are poor horror rip-offs like Shhhhhh, Raaz, Bhoot and even the awful Tamil horror Whistle.

Injoke for a mate .... (Cheetha Entertainment must live - lol)

A few other movies of interest:

Mr X in Bombay ; Invisibility; (Song: Mere Mehboob Qyamat Hogi)

Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi; Horror/ Suspense; (Song: Hazoore Waala---)

Woh Kaun Thi; Horror/ Suspense/ Romantic; (Song: Naina Barse, and many more)

Mahal; Horror Suspense

Sindbad Alibaba Aladin; Fantasy/ Special effects

BTW, can we count Mythological films as Sci Fi. Why Not. Even Star Wars, Star Trek etc seem to be similar to Indian Mythology.

Thanks for the replies everyone! The titles listed so far give me a starting point to explore. I'll check the synopsis and reviews (if available) for each one of the movies mentioned and see if I'd be interested.

Thanks also to pillairaj for the recommendation for India Weekly and Shahran Sunny Audit for the explanation of why there are so few Indian horror DVDs. I figured that Bollywood frowned on violent movies.

On the contrary. There are many action films with violent scenes.

Hmm... Then why are horror movies with violence frowned upon? Because of the gore factor and people assume that horror must equal gore?

Just realised, the title of this this thread includes ACTION films.

Action Films were known as STUNT films, till sixties. Action Film was just a new prestigeous name given to Stunt Films. At one time, Manmohan Desai himself said, " my family has always made this type of films. They were called Stunt Films then and now when they are made with big budget and are successful, these are called Action Films".

There are a lots of Stunt films; Parasmani, Zabak, Dara Singh films, Ajit-Helen films, Hunterwali etc etc. Till 60s there were as many Stunt Films as Other kind Social-Romantic films.

I don't know too much about Indian horror, but action films are not particularly Puritanical about violence.

The Hot Spot is a good resource for Indian and Pakistani horror films. "The Living Corpse" (Zinda Laash), a Pakistani horror film, was released on DVD in October.

Am I correct in assuming that Indian horror films were popular only outside the big cities?
