It's known to me that most Hollywood movies use either 1.85:1 or 2.35:1.

But what about Indian movies. On this site I've read the aspect ratios of some movies to be 2.55:1, 2.40:1 etc.
So what ratios are used?

I've seen some theatres in India describe themselves as 70mm.What's so great about it?I've observed that the screen in those theatres are a bit narrower that many others?

Knight, you may want to do a forum search on these topics as we have discussed these issues in detail several times. Anyway, in short,
1. Hollywood films are usually 1.85 hard/soft matte, 2.35:1 Anamorphic and Super 35 2.35:1. Anything else would be considered out of the ordinary.

2. India's commercial films are by far in 2.35:1 Cinemascope. Ocassionally, some arthouse/experimental films are 1.85, e.g. Makdee. Rajiv Rai likes to shoot in Super 35 2.35:1. These are all exceptions. Old Cinemascope was 2.55:1.

3. 70mm is normally 2.2:1. There are exceptions like Ultra Panavision and Imax. 70mm results in a larger negative, which should produce higher resolution and less grain but note that many filmmakers shoot their film on 35mm and 'blow' it up to 70mm.
