The dubbed English version of Sanjay Leela Bhansali´s Devdas, has been submitted for censor certification to the Central Board of Film Certification.

This version is shorter compared to the Hindi version by about 1200 metres to suit the type of audience it is aimed at. Some of the elaborate song and dance sequences have been removed.

The actual film length is measured in metres and most Indian films are generally in the 4000 to 5000 metre length.

Sholay if I remember was approximately 3.30 hrs and it's length was approx 6000 meters based on this, one can calculate that approximately there are 28.5 meters to a minute and therefore 1200 meters translate to around 41 minutes. I am relying on memory about the Sholay figures so they may not be totally accurate.

Anyhow, all you have to do is pop in any Hindi DVD witht the Censor Board certificate at the begining and make a note of the film length from it. Then based on the running time of the film you ccould easily figure out the length in meters per minute, which you could then use to figure out how much in minutes Devdas has been cut.

They should remove anything but the songs. I think some of the dialogue portions were a little badly done, not the songs. For example, the introduction sequence. I don't think they had to remove songs from Moulin Rouge to suit an English-speaking audience.

The songs were the only tolerable thing about the film. Who wants to watch a songless, dubbed version?
