I remember that a made-for-TV filmisation of this acclaimed novel by Khushwant Singh was telecast on Star TV in 1997 or 1998. I forget the director's name, but she had also directed the critically well-received "Miss.Beatty's Children". The movie starred Nirmal Pandey and Rajath Kapoor, and boasted good production values.

Is there any news of this DVD? I think Star TV might have produced this, and hence would be the right holders. There is a big move to releasing TV serials/movies onto DVD in the west. I hope this is taken up in India too. Can't wait to have Buniyaad, Nukkad, Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, Malgudi Days, Mr. Wagle etc etc on the 5" silvery disks that we all love so much!

I remember some news about this film when it was show in London few years back. Train to Pakistan was actually a feature film with about 3hr running time but it was also shown in a shorter version by the UK Channel 4. It suffered a lot from censors in India and was cut down. From the info I found on the web apparently the production was by National Film Development Corporation – whoever they are ??? Don’t know about the link with Star TV. I would also like to get this on DVD but alas no news on any pending DVD of this.

I believe NFDC is a government controlled body, for promoting and producing movies in India. Its a residue of the socialist times that we had, and continues to finance art movies. Regarding ownership by Star TV, I was just guessing, as the movie premiered on it.
