No matter how good or bad Albion and Woodside theatres are, they were the only ones, in Toronto, showing Indian movies regularly. Lately they reduced # of shows, then started bringing in other language movies and now Woodside Cinema has no Indian movies at all. Watching movies in any theatre, including Woodside or Albion, is better than watching DVD movies. Indian DVD movies are going down hill in quality as well.

I wonder if this is the beginning of the end of theatrical screenings.

Looking at the trade #s, in India (IndiaFM) , average gross from one theatre in first week is bet Rs 50,000 and $ 150,000. This comes to aprox bet $1500 to $5000 per print. Sure enough, this much can be grossed here in North America as well. If a print can be released in India to earn $2000 or so in India, it can be released here, even in centers much smaller than Toronto, too.

economics at work again. just by looking at the quick embrace of dvds (pirated) by the community, it wasn't hard to fortell the end of movie screenings here eventually...
however, the theatres will have movies again, in a big way, during summer (when all the biggies - LOC, KMG, MPKDH, etc., are all released...)

by the way, if you're hinting at screenings in ottawa - it's not really worth it. at max, there is sometimes a slight profit, but its not worth the hassle in trying to get a print...(well atleast its more viable than having shows here! :) )

Ottawa is a far cry. Even Montreal, same size as Toronto, stopped theatre screenings of Indian movies long time ago.

What I wonder about is, can't a city like Montreal gross $2000 (excluding theatre rental) in one week. This is how much film prints make in India in one week. I guess a film print costs a little more than $2000, but recovering $2000 from one print in first week is deemed enough to bring out one print.

guys, relax!!!!!

Woodside has no movies because there are no major releases right now!! Come on, who's going to watch "Kash Aap Hamare Hote" or "Dhund" or "Indian Babu" in theatres????

there only mistake was not releasing "Talaash" in theatres.

I bet things will be back to normal after World Cup is over. Just wait till "Chura Liya Hai Tumne" is released then "Ek Aur Ek Gyarah", "Jaal", "The Hero", and "Andaaz".

Just wait a while and catch up on the US Films!!

Despite the current fad of Bollywood movies, the likes of Woodside Cinema in Scarbrough, Ontario will never stop showing popular Indian Movies(unless otherwise it wants to go out of business). Management probably doesn't even recover 1/10 of its expenses by showing home made Iranian movies than it would by showing Indian Movies. Woodside use to bring back popular classics during such times. I fail to see why they don't do as such now? Perhaps--the age of DVDs probably diminishes such ideas to be continued. But in any case, Woodside Cinemas will always show the biggies when they come around.
