Could it be that this print was converted to widescreen? (sorry - don't know the technical terms here). What I mean is could this print have been cropped at the top and bottom and made into widescreen? The main reason I say this is that there is a quite a bit of space at the top and bottom of all the screencaps that can be cropped without affecting the movie.

Yeh! Wot he said :p

Ali

maybe he's talkin about 'anamorphic' enhanced for widescreen tv's ???

i saw a differnt version of the dvd it dose not have a menu or any chapters as soon as the dvd player finish loading it has a notice sign that says this is an advance copy of bollywood/hollywood only for canada. the retail dvd will be coming out on march 25, 03 with fully loaded extras in canada. so i think the copy i saw was an original. the retail dvd and advance dvd are under mongrel media and the print i saw was much better than the one on the screen shots

i saw it in the theatres, and i can confirm that the film is ATLEAST 1.85:1.

Those caps look like 4:3 so its not OAR.

Is that text overlay part of the film - one that says "Devdas: Very tragic.." and "Romantic couple song"??

yep the text overlay is part of the film and looks to be at the correct (original) height.

the text wasn't placed near the bottom as most subtitled prints are. The text was all over the place. It is supposed to be casual, offbeat and humourous I guess (some of it was funny).

Each song had its own title as a text overlay and some key indian terms (as devdas in one of those caps) had their own text translations.

Does this DVD claim to be from Mongrel Media? Anyhow I have emailed Mongrel Media and hopefully a reply from them should put at rest the issue whether this DVD is an original or pirated. MY vote is PIRATED all the way, but lets see.

Dear Sanjay:

Thanks for your e-mail re. the Bollywood/Hollywood DVD. Yes, the copy you mention has been pre-released by Mongrel Media. Our intent was to get the advance copies into the marketplace before the pirated copies make their way here from India.

We will be releasing a fully loaded dvd on March 25 and you will be able to buy this from all the stores that carry dvd's.

with best wishes,
Hussain Amarshi

Got a reply from Mongrel Media and it turns out this DVD is an original release. One thing they seem to have wrong though is that pirated DVDs originate from India, the fact is that pirated DVDs mostly originate from US & Canada and also the MIddle East.

The original DVD release of Bollywood Hollywood by Mongrel Media is absolutely crap, actually worse than even Eros DVDs. The DVD has no menu, or chapters. It is not only non anamorphic, but it is also non OAR. The film in the theater is in Cinemascope (2.35:1), just saw it last night at the theater, whereas on the DVD it is 4:3 The sound on the DVD is not in 5.1 Dolby Digital but rather it is in Po Logic Surround which is also unlike the theatrical print which was in Dolby Digital 5.1

Buyer Beware: Do not buy the DVD from Mongrel Media.

I saw it in theatre @ 1.85:1.
I wonder if the 2.35:1 print contains extra on the sides or if 2.35:1 is matted at top and bottom of the 1.85:1 picture??

this is for sure 1:1.85. I think someone got a bit excited and overmatted it to scope.

May be it's not a pirate. Producers called it an Advance Copy; Proper Release will be later and will be loaded with extras.
