Ear Deafning Audio
Which Indian Movies and format DD or DTS??

BACKGROUND:
Recently I saw Femme Fatale in SDDS at AMC. The sound was good and loud and clear. As the theatre was SDDS equipped, sound was awesome. It must have been peaking at 115-120 dB and the directionality was excellent. The only let down was that the the picture was cropped from sides as the screen was 1.85: 1 and the movie was 2.35:1. I noticed it as I had seen a 2.35:1 clip as well. Cropping was evident in a few scenes where the subject went off screen in 1.85:1 presentation and was OK in 2.35:1 presentation.

FOR THIS THREAD:
Now, coming to the topic of this thread:
Which Indian movies had Thundering audio like Jurasic Park, Star Wars, Terminator 2 etc?? Also, which theatres and sound system, DD or DTS could do justice to that audio??

Road - One of the most active surround sound mixes I have ever heard (English movies included)
Dil Se - Excellent surround sound
Hindustani - Excellent surround sound.

Although there are many ground breaking work done in Hindi films in terms of sound, Dil Se definitely claims the prize as the most impressive one. The use of the rain sound as an ambience and soldiers marching at the parade ceremony are some of highlights of the film. Of course the music of the film does a great help too since AR Rahman was the only musician who could record such deep bass back in 1998. Had the film gone to someone like Rajesh Roshan, the result would have been terrible.

What surprise me is that H.Sridhar has recorded many films but never quite the same as Dil Se (except Lagaan). Probably because other directors don't consider sound to be worth spending time and money on especially since sound design is a relatively new aspect in Hindi film industry.

However in terms of sound design Lagaan is unbeatable, it has more complex scenes involving many characters plus sync sound provides a more natural and subtle feel to a film than ADR. Personally I think sync sound is a great change from the typical masala flick where dialogue and background music are both trying to compete with each other heard especially in Sunny Deol movies.

I remember watching Taal(in DTS) a few years ago, whenever the song sequence started the whole theater burst alive but during other scenes the sound fail to impress, even the action scenes were boring.

Best Sound

1) Dil Se
2) Lagaan
3) Mission Kashmir
4) Satya
5) Jungle
6) Company

Worth mentioning

1) 1942 A love story (First film to use Dolby Stereo but recording flawed)
2) Dil Chahta Hai (Sync sound but dialogue channel too soft)
3) Rangeela (One of the first Spectral recordings)
4) Asoka (Noisy movie! but still good)
5) Zubeidaa (Sync sound...actually very good)
6) Hey Ram (Sync sound but recording flawed...sounds like a recorded at very low bit rate even in DTS)

In first category..i'll add humbly SD version of KOYLA!!

but let me elaborate on congrees point...RECORDING, RECORDING, MIXING, FOLLY EFFECTS!!! determine a lot!!

I ndian movies are not UPTO IT!!

I think, Sunny's INDIAN with Dynamic 6.1 mix might be a candidate for second category..ASOKA..r2, imho, might be progressable to FIRST CATEGORY!!

Now I rememre!!DEI's BAADAL and ZIDDI!!

BTW!!Ziddi..Video is AV bit rate 9.2(does it qualify as SUPER BIT)..hmm?

Just would like to add that my opinions are based on what I heard in theater and not on dvd. As far I know Indian dvds usually are a messed up representation of the actual work. Plus there is no such thing as a DTS dvd in Hindi...

Thanks for all the movie names.
Keep'em coming.

Please also tell me, which theatres and sound system did justice to these high octane audios (which theatres had thundering bass for the audio)?? How was the audio as compared to Jurassic Park or Terminator-2 ??

Hmm! congress says, theatrical presentations!!

i would add HINDI"PUKAR" in DTS, and LAGAAN, in DD was GREAT!!

BUT, Let me tell, you, same theatre, EQUIPPED with BOTH, formats!! DD/DTS!! it is VERY INCONSISTENT!! film to film, hindi films!!

JURRASAIC PARK, was equaly GREAT in BOTH FORMATS!!

BTW!! every time I PICKED UP MY SOUND to watch, even HOLLYWOOD film I was Disappointed!!

I esp went to a THEATRE WITH SDDS! 8 channel for a CT release SLII, but I was disappointed! because, HOMETHEATRE VERSION (DVD) of SLI, had a BETTER DD sound than this SDDS!!

Rana ji, tell me abt diologue comprehension of BOLLYWOOD HOLLYWOOD in your theatre!! as I guess, u said watching in DTS!! I was told, because of low budget, only made in DD and diologues were not very clear, mostly, first one hr!!! :baaa:

The theatre where I watched it was DD and THX (no DTS).
Dialogues were clear, but I didn't like the audio because I found the audio level too low.

Here is what I said about its audio in Bollywood Hollywood thread:

"Saw this movie yesterday in THX, as well as, Digital advertised theatre.

The movie fits the taste of the audiences it is made for, i.e., Western audiences.
Talking of Digital Sound and THX advertized theatre, the audio was no more than 75 dB at its peak. The Bollywood style rocking songs should have been at 110 dB but were below 75dB and sounded like mild Ghazals. Well, but thats the perception of the western audiences and the projectionists."

If you want to experince really good surround sound then watch any Indian film with DTS-ES. The sound is wicked on the big screen :) them bass tubes in the cinema hall really do litterally make the world rock with bass!!

Because mixing is done by different people for DD and DTS.
