I live in the Manchester area and would love to rent original Indian DVDs - anyone have any idea where to go (i need them with subs).

Also any ideas for on-line Indian DVD rentals - i have tried Jolly and co and they told me that they are upgrading their site and had stopped renting until their site came on-line next month (that was 3-4 months ago). Anyone else any ideas??

Or please Jolly speed things up. ???

samosa my friend.. good to see another mancunian joining zulm!! :) as for DVDs for hire in the manchester area.. there will be fat chance of that.. i probably have more DVDs in my house than the scummy retailers in our area!! Saying that, Shadoos on Wilmslow Road, next to royal naz restaurant have a selection of DVDs for hire.. similarly there is video shop in Cheetham Hill that have DVds for hire.. but to tell u the truth theyre all theives and dont have any quality titles!! unfortuntately thats why people like me have to buy em so other people can watch them!! ???

Yeah, I have noticed there are no decent places here to rent. What sadness considering Cheetham Hill and Rusholme u would have thought would be the logical place.

Samosa m/f ( and its not a slang so dont rebuke me for this :D ). before you crave for anything from Jolly, just take a look at his reputation here on zulm and you will see what ppl have to say abt him and his site. Not only is it one of the most expensive sites its also not customer friendly . I have never had the chance to rent or buy anything from him and prolly never will. If you are interested in DVds and want to build a collection why dont you do the following :-

1.) To check the quality of a film, rent a VHs tape of the film from anywhere ( 1£ shouldnt be much for you)...near you

2.) Then if you are sure you want to buy those DVDs.. just place an order from Indiaweekly here in the usa...and if u take into acct the exchange rate you will definately be at an advantage ( and trust me it will be much cheaper than what Jolly may charge you)

This is not directly related to ur query but hope this helps you.

Hi Sknath,

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. However the reason I wanted a DVD rental store is that as we know dvd transfer varies so much, and by renting a DVD i can ascertain whether it is a 'dvd to buy' or whether it is complete dross.....

Hey Samosa, you will have to follow some rules here . If you have a choice between DEI-EROS and EROS-B4U dvds then go for the former (there should be some indication of DEI on the DVD).. If you are uncertain then ask ur grocery wallah to play the DVd for you.
Now as scarface has suggested, make sure you *always* take a second opinion before you buy any DVD... Here are some rules of thumb :-
1.) Metrodome version of ASOKA in the UK is much better than the US version
2.) All EROS dvds, SPARK DVDs are real shit in quality as they are authored by Media Dimensions ( and if you have a HDTV then you are in bad luck as they are encoded from an interlaced source.)

So you have practically no choice left if you are a quality conscious DVD collector. Your best bet would be in not renting DVDs for checking the quality...You can do that by posting ur queries here..and someone will definately rebly :)
