The current best:

1) Yash Chopra - always had the ear
2) VVC - How come most of you missed him. MK, Kareeb, and Parinda were very good soundtracks while 1942 was amazing.
3) SLB - all of his films have had it
4) Mani Ratnam - though ARR has a lot to do with this
5) Subhash Ghai - maybe he should just record songs and quit direction
