Raju Srivastava Dies At 58, India Loses Comedy’s Shining Star

Comedian Raju Srivastava dies in Delhi at the age of 58, confirms his family. He was admitted to AIIMS Delhi on August 10 after experiencing chest pain and collapsing while working out at the gym.

New Delhi: Raju Srivastava, a veteran comedian who was admitted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi, died at the age of 58 on Wednesday (September 21). Raju Srivastava had a heart attack on August 10 and was hospitalized after he complained of chest pain while running on a treadmill at the gym. He also underwent an angioplasty the same day. Also Read - Raju Srivastava Death: Rajpal Yadav And Others Mourn Loss of The Comedian

“I got a call from the family about half an hour ago saying he is no more. It is really unfortunate news. He was fighting in the hospital for over 40 days,” said his brother Dipoo Srivastava. Raju Srivastava was declared dead at 10.20 am, as per hospital sources.

The comic-actor’s funeral will be held at Nigam Bodh Ghat in Delhi on Thursday (September 22).

Raju Srivastava was on a life support system at AIIMS, Delhi. The comedian regained consciousness after 15 days on ventilator support. However, on September 1, after he ran a fever as high as 100 degrees, he was put on ventilator support again.

The comedian, who originally belonged to Kanpur, left for Mumbai in 1982. He worked in the entertainment industry since late 1980s, and received recognition after participating in the first season of the stand-up comedy show “The Great Indian Laughter Challenge” in 2005. He had featured in films like ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’, ‘Aamdani Atthanni Kharcha Rupaiya’ and ‘Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon’ among others.

He also appeared in the third season of the reality television show ‘Bigg Boss’, ‘Nach Baliye 6’ and ‘Comedy Nights With Kapil’.

Later in 2014, he ventured into politics and was fielded on the ticket of the Samajwadi Party from Kanpur for the Lok Sabha elections. He returned the ticket, however, saying he was not getting enough support from the local units of the party. After that, he joined Bharatiya Janata Party on March 19, 2014.

Later, he served as the brand ambassador of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat campaign and was the Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Film Development Council. In that capacity, he laid the foundation for the upcoming NOIDA film city project.

Battling odds, but on his own terms, was Srivastava’s way of life. Raju Srivastava, counted as among the most high-profile and experienced comics in the country, is survived by his wife and two children.

Artist Lalitha Lajmi, late actor-filmmaker Guru Dutt's sister, died on Monday at the age of 90. Taking to Twitter, the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) shared the news of her demise.
"With Profound grief and sorrow NGMA, Mumbai, Ministry of Culture, Government of India shares the news of demise of veteran artist and printmaker Smt. Lalitha Lajmi who left for heavenly abode this morning(13.02.2023). Our Deepest Condolences. RIP," NGMA wrote in the caption of the post.

Ms Lajmi was born to a poet father and a poly-linguistic writer mother in Kolkata in 1932. She was a self-taught artist with a keen interest in classical dance. Over the decades, she held several exhibitions at international art galleries in Paris, London and Netherlands.

NGMA described Ms Lajmi as an "unparalleled watercolourist". Through her work, she usually narrated a layered history of the modern Indian woman in the decades that followed Independence.

"Often her works reflect the hidden tensions that exist between men and women, captured in the different roles they play. Yet, her women are not meek individuals, but assertive and individualistic, with a strong autobiographical element," NGMA said.

Condoling Ms Lajmi's death, Jehangir Nicholson Art Foundation (JNAF), Mumbai, wrote, "We are deeply saddened by the news of artist Lalitha Lajmi's passing. Lajmi was a self-taught artist with a keen interest in classical dance. Her works had an element of melancholy and performance, seen here in her artwork, 'Dance of Life and Death'".

Notably, Ms Lajmi played a small cameo in Aamir Khan starrer 'Tare Zameen Par', as the chief guest for the intra-school art competition.

BELA BOSE

Yesteryear actress-dancer Bela Bose, who was part of 200 films, passes away at 79

Yesteryear actress and danseuse Bela Bose breathed her last on Monday (February 20). She was 79. She died from age-related causes, according to reports.

Trained in classical Manipuri dance, Bose was known for her energetic choreography and expressive eyes. Along with Helen and Aruna Irani, she was one of the most prominent dancers in tinsel town.

In a career spanning over three decades, she acted in more than 200 Hindi and regional films. She was part of many iconic films such as ‘Bandini’, ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’, ‘Professor’ etc.

Although the actress was born in Calcutta, the family relocated to Bombay in 1951 after a bank crash wiped out their savings.

She began her career as a background dancer to help her poverty-stricken family. She rose to prominence when she featured in the song ‘Main Nashe Mein Hoon’ opposite Raj Kapoor in the 1959 film of the same name. She debuted as a lead actress in the film ‘Sautela Bhai’ opposite actor-director Guru Dutt. Another film where she wowed the audience with her effortless performance was ‘Hawa Mahal’ (1962), where she essayed the role of Helen’s sister. She was also active in Bengali theatre.

Bose was married to actor and filmmaker, Ashish Kumar, who was also her co-star in ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’. Aside from dancing, she also enjoyed a successful stint as a vamp/antagonist. Her most famous villainous role would undoubtedly be that of the Durga Vyas, the scheming sister-in-law of the protagonist in ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’.

Despite frequently portraying the seductress onscreen, the actress was more conservative in real life and reportedly passed up many opportunities due to her refusal to wear a swimsuit onscreen. She went on a self-imposed hiatus from 1980.
The actress was also an accomplished painter, poet, and national-level swimmer. She is survived by her son, daughter, and grandson.
