Cinematographer Rajen Kothari dies after cardiac arrest

Leading cinematographer Rajen C Kothari of Ghayal and Zubeida fame is no more. Yesterday evening, the ace lensman who worked in most of Rajkumar Santoshi and Shyam Benegal’s films, suffered a massive heart attack while on the campus of Whistling Woods. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.

Sound Designer Rakesh Ranjan, who worked with Kothari in many films, mourned the loss of a very close friend. The funeral will be held on Friday ‘after Kothari’s sister returns to India,’ he told Mirror.

A student from Whistling woods revealed that Kothari collapsed on their campus around 7pm. “He was rushed to the Lifeline Hospital in Gokuldham, Goregaon East, where he was declared dead,” the student said.

Another friend of Kothari, social activist Ashoke Pandit, told Mirror, “Rajen was perfectly fine till Tuesday. His demise is a big loss to the film industry.”

Actor-director Dinesh Thakur passes away

MS Shinde, Sholay's editor passes away

Shinde had fallen on hard times and had been living in PMGP Colony in Dharavi for the last two years. He was forced to shift there after the building he lived in Parel collapsed and the owner refused to help.

Veteran filmmaker Yash Chopra (80) passes away
21 October 2012

NEW DELHI: Legendary film director, screenwriter and film producer Yash Chopra is dead. Chopra, 80, had been admitted to Lilavati hospital in Bandra on October 13 after being diagnosed with dengue*, according to TV reports.

Known for making some of the best love stories and action dramas, the veteran had been busy shooting for his last directorial project — Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

"He had been suffering from complications of dengue for a long time. He suffered from multi organ failure, because of which he died," a hospital source said.

According to reports Chopra had to even cancel a trip to the Swiss Alps for the filming of the last remaining song sequence in his upcoming film. The trip to had to be cancelled after he was admitted to Lilavati hospital.

Born in Lahore on September 27, 1932, Chopra began his career as an assistant director to I.S. Johar and his elder brother, B.R. Chopra.

In his over five decade old career, Chopra has made several hits like 'Deewar', 'Trishul', 'Chandni', 'Silsila', 'Veer Zaara' and others.

Mr Chopra is survived by his wife Pamela and two sons Aditya and Uday.

All three of these movies are directed by B.R. Chopra and not I.S. Johar. 'Rana' wished to know the movie or movies that Yash Chopra assisted I.S. Johar in.

Very sad to realize Yash Chopra go. Deewaar & Trishul have and will continue to stand the test of time. One can only appreciate the best of his craft by revisiting these greats.

Thanks for trying to sort this out.

BTW, IMDB, as well as, Indiafm don't have all the data yet, although volunteers keep on adding.
Neither of those sites lists any Assisatan Director credits of Yash Chopra.

I checked VCD Of Hum Sab Chor Hein (courstsey Shuman; has full credits including the original CC from 1957) and it has Murli Manohar Mathur for Assistant Director credit. Yash Chopra is not in the credits.

So, must be another film, in the 1953-1959 time frame, that Yash Chopra started his filmi career as Assistant to I S Johar.
