MUMBAI, Nov. 12. — Monica Bedi, wife and accomplice of gangster Abu Salem, is averse to legal assistance and has reportedly told investigators that she is considering arguing her own case. She is also reportedly ready to cooperate with the Central Bureau of Investigation and police in Mumbai and elsewhere.
An official source said this was the first sign that she might be ready to turn approver. She is aware that the charges against her are not as serious as those against Abu Salem, the source pointed out. Monica is believed to have operated as Salem’s agent in Bollywood since 1998, striking deals with movie personalities on his behalf and is expected to be able to provide a complete dossier on her husband.
Special Task Force officers also had their first “interaction†with Salem at the CBI’s Mumbai office today. The focus of the interrogation was reportedly on the way the Dawood Hasan Ibrahim Kaskar network operated from the time of the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts and its links with terrorist outfits from across the border. Other Central intelligence agencies are likely to join the CBI in the investigation.
The arrested couple, not yet estranged but likely to be if Monica takes the plunge and turns approver, are an investigator’s dream – they hold the key to some long unanswered questions related to the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, Bollywood’s infamous links and friendships with with the underworld and the cricket match-fixing scandal.
A CBI team in Mumbai was reportedly giving final touches to a questionnaire prepared to quiz Salem, which he will be asked to answer in writing. Sleuths are in the process of devising an interrogation strategy, though initial information emanating from official sources is that the questioning will, for the moment, be aimed at getting Salem to delve into details of various aspects of the crimes he is thought to be involved in. All of Salem’s statements will be cross-checked, including with what Monica tells investigating agencies.
