An interesting choice of selections, while I personally really favour some of the choices in the given list, there are almost equally as much I really wouldn't have if this were my list. I would also include; V. M. Tarkunde, M. N. Roy, Kamal Haasan(I'd pick him over Rajnikant & Big B), Kodavatiganti Kutumbarao, Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay & Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar. However, from the choices provided in the website, my vote goes to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

Good Topic.

Most of the candidates in the list are the ones that became super rich, or their close ones became super rich, because of their political stature. They need to be condemned, not voted as equal to Mahatama who really never gained a single paisa, for himself or for his family, from his political clout.

Of the worthy candidates that I can think of are:

Sant Vinoba Bhave (Really a saint, no personal gains)

Atal Behari Bajpaye (I think he did not allow his close ones to benefit financially during his tennure as PM; his sister still struggling with poverty, houising, etc ??)

Jaya Prakash Narayan (Prime-ministership was his had he wanted it, post Indira Gandhi Emergency; not sure if he or close ones benefited financially from his stature)

Mother Terressa (Declared a saint already)

Baba Amte

APJ Abdul Kalam

And I don't know enough about the following regarding personal gains:

Ram Manohar Lohia

Ela Bhatt

Vallabhai Patel

And, how could anyone consider Nehru or Indira Gandhi (as per my criteria of "No Personal Gains") who created political dynasty and are super super super rich, hidden accounts, while all, yes all, their Kashmiri Pandit brothers have been thrown out of their houses, living in poverty, and most are still living in Refugee Camps for over 20 Yrs now.

BTW, the following is the vote count as of June 20, 2012:

(But, in my opinion, anyone who amassed huge wealth because of his stature should be disqualified)

I agree. And to me, it seems the exterior multinationls that have come into India in the past 10-12 years have done more for the Indian economy overall than some of these wealthy mentioned figures could have for over 50 years. The latter group failed to accurately utilize it's own people.
