Was after an external hard drive to store my music and photos on - any suggestions on the best ones out there at a reasonable price?

Was also after a media server to stream my music, photos and video to my PS3. I've tried Windows Media Player 11, but that doesn't seem to work too well. PS£ Media Center didn't seem to work very well either, and TVersity worked with music and photos, but couldn't get the videos to stream. Any ideas which is the best one out there?

I use tversity my self/ Hard drive ext are only FAT32 type are compatible with PS3 but sadly you have max 4GB limit for storage files.

I would recommend changing internal ps3 drive and then transfer files to ps3 HD via Tversity /PC.

Few more querries:

1) As I connected new wireless modem-router (4 outlets and wireless), my son says that his wired connection to PS-3 slows down whenever wireless PC is ON. Any idea why ?? Or should it make a difference ??

2) If PS-3 is connected wireless, it's not up to speed even if this is the only device connected to internet. Basically so slow that On Line Games can't be played effectively. Sluggish and sometimes even freezes (if response is slow, even if you take an action first, opponent responds and effectively counters it long before your action starts). Is it normal ??

3) Can I connect the old modem (wired) as well as the new modem-router (wireless) out of two different phone outlets of the same phone number, at the same time or at different times ??

Thanks.

connect your ps3 with modem via cable for faster connection.

Hey Rana - here are some responses. I'm no expert so I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. I don't think you mentioned if you had cable internet or DSL.

1) If you have more than one device connected to the net at the same time you are essentially sharing the net bandwidth so dependent on what you are doing I am sure you can expect some slowing down.

2) Wireless is slower than wired. For resource hungry things I always switch to wired instead of using wireless.

3) Yes - you can do this.

Thanks.

Another software puzzle. Can't understand why:

Tried to buy DEI Tumko Na Bhool Paayengay and found all copies in 3 stores that I checked, all rotten in 2nd layer. Finally found a working copy that looks like DEI original but is supposed to be a Pakistani pirate disc. It seems to be exact replica (7.8 GB, anamorphic and Progressive). I tried to make a backup copy of this.
The puzzle is that all ripped filers are anamorphic but when you burn a disc, it's not anamorphic. How can that happen that files on PC are anamorphic but when you burn it on disc, it is not ??
Any ideas ??

Also, can someone check if another of problematic DEI disc Yeh Dil Aashiqana, is anamorphic or not ??, Progressive or interlaced ??. I bought this DVD that's supposed to be original but is 4:3 and is interlaced. Just 6.9 GB (DEI DVDs are normally 7.5-7.9 GB) . Moreover, the disc worked OK as it was opened in store but by the time it got home (24-30 hrs), it rotted away and doesn't play in 2nd layer.

I have seen DVD COPIES DVD 9, from PAKISTAN for even ORIG HOLLYWOOD OFFICIAL DVDS, but they are NOT TRUE ANAMORPHIC but RATHER STRETCH AND FILL ANAMORPHIC FRAME  How and why it is done so? :? like you.

DVD 9 copied like this is simply UNACCEPTABLE! btw TNBPG was orig squished so looks better when stretched lol

I guess this is an expensive solution to PS3/XBOX owners. But for people that don't own these systems, Popcornhour seems to do the trick. http://www.popcornhour.com/onlinestore/

You still need a media server. WMP11 works great, but http://www.jrmediacenter.com/ is also good. much better than iTunes, even though that doesn't say much. hah

external hard drives--Seagate FreeAgent Pro. you can disable the annoying light from the included software. 5 year warranty.

I used Tversity for a while and found it a little slow , and had trouble playing the MKV files I have on my computer. PS3 Media server was the opposite - it loaded very quickly and played the MKV files - but wouldn't play any of the avi files at all - although I'm guessing this has something to do with my setup. I'll play around with it a bit more, but this has potential to be very good (if I can ever figure out how to use it!!).

u should convert mkv to .ts or use mk2vob software to convert to mpeg2 etc, i can play all dd 5.1 as 5.1 sound, and prefer to transfer to ps3 hard drive before playback, to get benefit of upscale.

All avi, divx, xvid are a charm.

Now with new mk2vob, u can convert dts to pcm, that is simply brilliant as ps3 or tversity do not decode dts yet. true hd can become pcm or dd 5.1, dts hd to pcm, and I love it.

and as I said ps3 has altogether changed the way you watch movies!

I tried ps3mediaserver few days a go (not my ps3) and that streamed all the file I tried inc 1080p mkv with DTS sound - its transcoding so the results are not the same as the source. ps3mediaserver seems to doddle to setup and use, run on PC and browse on PS3, there no configuration todo. Apparently ps3mediaserver also works on the Xbox360 - the xbox support is being kept hidden yet as it doesn't work as well as on the PS3 and is still under development.

No probably not, transcoding prob converted the audio to some other format even though the source contained the DTS. Sorry not got the PS3 any more to try it out.
