Anti-Salman protests rock many parts of country
New Delhi, July. 15 (PTI): Anti-Salman Khan protests today rocked many parts of the country, a day after an expose' about his alleged links with the underworld, forcing several cinema halls to stop screening his film 'Maine Pyar Kyon Kiya' on the first day of its release.
Activists of the BJP, VHP, Bajrang Dal and Trinamool Congress raised slogans, held demonstrations, tore posters outside several cinema halls in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and West Bengal, and urged people not to watch the movie starring "a man who has admitted to having links with the underworld."
Bajrang Dal activists shouted slogans, tore posters and burnt effigies of the actor in front of cinema halls in Indore, Jabalpur and Gwalior.
Activists of the saffron outfit created a ruckus outside cinema halls in Ahmedabad and Bharuch, while Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha workers held demonstrations denouncing the actor's alleged connections with the underworld.
As a precautionary measure, security was beefed up near cinema halls in all cities which witnessed the protests.
Audio tapes purportedly contained a conversation between Khan and Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai, in which he allegedly flaunted his underworld links and tried to bully the actress to perform at a programme organised by gangster Abu Salem.
The issue also figured in the Maharashtra Assembly and Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil, said the Government would make a statement in the House on July 20.
Cinema hall owners and distributors voluntarily withdrew screening of the film fearing violence, a senior police official said.
Following uproarious scenes, the management of 'City Gold' multiplex in Ahmedabad and 'Shalimar Talkies' in Bharuch district of Gujarat, withdrew the screening of the film.
The owners of two other multiplex off the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway downed their shutters and removed the posters of the film.
Screening of the film was stopped halfway in the multiplex "Wide Angle" after the saffron outfit activists protested outside.
Reports from Surat said, Bajrang Dal activists stopped the screening of the film in Kinary theatre and two multiplexes.
"Though no loss or damage to theatres was reported from any area, screening of the first show of the movie was deferred in Indore, Jabalpur and Gwalior after protests and demonstrations by Bajrang Dal cadres," Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) A K Soni, told PTI in Bhopal.
In Indore, the saffron workers forced cinema hall owners to stop screening of the film and burnt Salman's effigy.
Over 100 activists assembled near the Menoka cinema hall in South Kolkata where the movie was to be released and shouted slogans urging people not to watch it.
Trinamool Congress Students' Union President Baiswanar Chatterjee, said the protest was not against the star or his films but against "a man who supported anti-nationals and their activities."
Eastern India Motion Pictures Association President Arijit Dutta, termed the protests as unfortunate, particularly for 'Nikita Art Films, distributors of the movie whose earlier release 'Jo Bole so Nihal' too had to be withdrawn after blasts in two cinema halls screening the movie in Delhi.
Shiv Sena activists demonstrated outside 'Sajan' theatre in Varanasi and burnt the posters of the film, demanding its withdrawal.
The protesters left the venue shouting slogans against Khan and demanding withdrawal of his film from the theatre.
In Mumbai, nearly 100 activists of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha were arrested, when they staged demonstrations in front Salman Khan's residence in suburban Bandra, police said.
The workers also stormed cinema theatres in some parts of the city and disrupted the shows of Khan's latest film.
BJYM workers stormed the 'R Mall' multiplex in Mulund (west) and Ganesh Theatre in Mulund (east), besides the Globus, Gaiety and Galaxy cinema halls in suburban Bandra and forced the managements to close down the shows of 'Maine pyar kyon kiya', BJYM Mumbai unit chief Sanjay Upadhyay claimed.
In Nagpur, over 150 BJP activists gathered outside 'Panchsheel' theatre, as screening the Khan starrer and tore off the posters of the film and also broke the glass panel of the cinema hall.
In Delhi, the protests organised by Shiv Sena turned out to be a damp squib as only a handful of activists turned up at the 'Golcha' theatre in central Delhi.
