Another release, another hit!

http://rediff.com/movies/2003/jun/03box.htm

It's turnaround time for Bollywood.
Ishq Vishk broke the long, dry spell at the box office. Then came Andaaz. Now, it's the turn of Ram Gopal Varma's star-studded Bhoot.

The scary supernatural thriller has opened fabulously and is expected to have a good run. On the other hand, the children's fantasy Jajantaram Mamantaram, which released the same day, failed to create any ripples.

Note: Films are ranked on the basis of their performance at the box office every week. Though a film may be declared a flop, it may have performed better than the other films that week.

Bhoot

Cast: Ajay Devgan, Urmila Matondkar, Nana Patekar, Fardeen Khan, Rekha, Victor Banerjee
Director: Ram Gopal Varma
A well-directed, tight film. Urmila's superb performance.

The review

Number of weeks: 2
BO Verdict: Flop
The review

Ishq Vishk

Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Shenaz Treasurywalla, Amrita Rao

The review

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

If u remember, so far REDIFF is the one with CONSERVATIVE review!!

The scary supernatural thriller has opened fabulously and is expected to have a good run. On the other hand, the children's fantasy Jajantaram Mamantaram, which released the same day, failed to create any ripples.

BHOOT AT THE BOX OFFICE! The film opens well in India's box office!

Ram Gopal Verma latest movie Bhoot has received some rave reviews and opened to a good response at the Indian box office. The horror film has received plenty of acclaim from the media for Urmila Matondkar's impressive performance. The opening weekend saw very good collections in major cities such as Mumbai and Delhi. Whilst a drop was noticed in some cities after the weekend, other places have remained fairly steady. Considering the budget of the film, it looks set to become a moneymaker

radio sargam..

While komal declared it 2/10...TRADE PUNDIT suck!!

Glad to see movies doing well theatrically.

I'll try to catch BHOOT this weekend. Too bad, I can see it in analog sub-standard audio only.

Did you notice, ANDAAZ graduated to HIT in this report from AVERAGE in last week's report.

What do we need to do to get a DEI standard or better DVDs of these two films, even if they come in 6 months??

Rana

I did see that rana!!

ANDAAZ...was kinda predictable for INDIAN AUDIENCE, if they can make a hit out of CRAP like MKKH, then, What da heck!

But film, of GENRE like BHOOT, with no Songs, no glamour(except URMILA looking CHIC!)

I was not OPTIMISTIC, that Indian audience will embrace this kinda film, JUST ON QUALITY MERITS only!!

BHOOT is a must watch, with GOOD SOUND!

DVDS>>>>ab Kiya boloun..it will be S* from spark and Tips..

BTW!! ROAD was a BAD TRANSFER, but VERY GOOD sound on DVD, IMHO

Just watched andaaz yesterday.. it was an OK film... certainly not worthy of the Hit status it has been given..... it was way too predictable....music was good but not exceptional.. priyanka chopra was good.. akshay looked uneasy.. climax was surely good..but hey our audiences can be way too unpredictable at times..
seeing bhoot this weekend so cannot compare yet!

BHOOT FAILS IN THE UK CHARTS!
The film doesn't find big enough audience!

Despite the hype surrounding Bhoot in the UK, the film didn't manage to find a large audience in the country and failed to enter the national box office charts. Although director Ram Gopal Verma's movies are normally acclaimed, they don't always find huge amounts of interest outside of India. Bhoot was unfortunately not an exception to the rule despite the fact it stars the likes of Urmila Matondkar, Ajay Devgan, Rekha and Fardeen Khan. Infact the film wasn't able to compete with order releases such as Andaaz, which made more money in its second weekend than Bhoot did in its first weekend.

BOX OFFICE

BHOOT

Amod Mehra

What a relief it has been to the film industry that the audience are making a beeline back to the theatres. Ek Aur Ek Gyarah, Ishq Vishk and Andaaz all took good openings but Bhoot has surpassed all these and taken a bumper opening - that too being a songless, short two hour film. As the film is made in a modest budget, the entire cost of the film is likely to be recovered in the first week itself! Bravo!

JAJANTARAM MAMANTARAM

This Indian inspired version of Gulliver’s Travels opened to decent houses. Maybe the opening could have been better but the pirated VCDs were out three days before the release of the film, which is too shocking for words!

ANDAAZ

The gentry may not have liked the film but the masses seem to have somewhat accepted the film at least initially, as they came in large numbers to see Andaaz. For the first four days, the going was good but fifth day onwards the drop in collections were steep. Seems the audience could not accept Akshay Kumar as a college student!

ARMAAN

The second week’s collections too were much below the mark. The only silver lining is that in Mumbai in certain good theatres some gentry audience have liked the film. But this section was too small a number to actually make much difference to the fate of the film.

COMING UP

NAYEE PADOSAN

For the second consecutive week a film produced by Nitin Manmohan is being released. Choreographer BH Tharun Kumar makes his debut as a director with this new starcast comedy film.

KHWAHISH

A bold film with pre-marital sex as its base. The film is directed by Govind Menon and stars Himanshu Malik opposite debutante Mallika Sherawat.

Screenindia's BO report.

Bhoot And New Releases Hold Promise

A week after its release, Ram Gopal Varma´s Bhoot is being celebrated as another success for the industry after a number of previous ones, more specifically, the real hit of the year, Suneel Darshan´s Andaaz. Trade analysts are confirming and assuring that the film is not a universal success, but is doing very well in a majority of the territories deeming it an above average film. Though, like no different, many analysts are on opposite ends regarding the film, all do admit that collections fluctuated but remained steady in many areas. Ram Gopal Varma has once again another non-flop under his belt, and this the industry is very happy for. The film that clashed with Bhoot, a youth oriented cartoon-styled drama J2M2 failed to create notable collections for itself as a film. At 10 crore, this is one of the most expensive children´s movie that has been produced in India and had to open well to prove successful at the box office. Unfortunately that did not happen. The opening was ordinary. As for a verdict, the makers of J2M2 have already got a sizeable portion of their investment from overseas, however in India it has to toil really hard so that the distributors recover their investment.

This week two no name films with no name stars compete at the box office. Both films (Nayee Padason and Khwahish) were touted as having good music and surprise attraction values. From reviews and box office premiers, it seems neither will work out.

Film
Bhoot
Starring
Urmila Matondkar, Ajay Devgan, Seema Biswas, Nana Patekar, Rekha, Fardeen Khan, Victor Bannerjee
Released
May 30th, 2003
Summary
Bhoot the 15 crore movie from Ram Gopal Varma, took a very good start but faltered from the 2nd day onward, only to pick up on Sunday once again. From Monday onwards the collections in UP, Bihar, West Bengal, East Punjab and Central India continued to vary.

However, in Mumbai City the movie has had a good weekend and also in Bangalore (south) where Bhoot released at ten theatres (including two theatres for morning show only) last Friday. The weekend collections were very good. Of the 102 shows screened during the weekend more than 80 were house full.

Final Verdict
Although it is early days, Ram Gopal Varma may be able to recover his investments but the distributors of Bhoot are set to lose in UP (Delhi-UP territory), East Punjab, Eastern Territory and parts of Central India. The collections in Mumbai City, South and Hyderabad, Nizam will be good, while in Delhi City it maybe reasonably good.

Andaaz, as predicted last week, has done well in spite of mixed reports (amongst public) and bad reports (in the trade). It is best in Bombay, Delhi-U.P., Bihar and Rajasthan. It is very strong in ‘B’ class centers and at a reasonable production cost of 10 crore, the movie becomes the first universal hit of 2003.

Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Preity Zinta, Gracy Singh, Randhir Kapoor, Introducing Aamir Bashir
Released
May 16th, 2003
Final Verdict
The movie fails in India except Mumbai City but has done well in overseas territory namely USA and UK.
