This is the first Bollywood Hit film of 2017, coming in August.
Saw it in theatre, and found nothing special. But with time, the film sticks with you. Thought Provoking and you can't forget the film. It sure has a message. Not many in the cities even realized that this issue existed.
Recall in the 50s, 60s and in the 70s, 80% of India's population lived in Villages. Villages homes/ cottages did not have Toilets in their homes or in their yards and not even in the villages (seen with my own eyes). It was mostly not even allowed, as correctly shown in the film. As per the film, now it's aprox 50% of the homes in India where there are still no toilets in the home or even in the village.
I recall a news article in the mid 1970s, where a Canadian Aid Worker wrote about his/ her experience in Nepal (Nepal, India same traditions) where he/ she could not adjust to the lifestyle and came back. Reason: They built a house in the village, where they were supposed to volunteer, for themselves and the Villagers revolted and the Toilet that they had built in their house was gutted by the Panchayat (Village Admin).
I'm sure popularity of this film and ridicule of the custom will help change their mindset.
