This is probably one of two or three hindi films that I'm really looking forward to this year and it's about f&cking time Kashyap decided to release it. He's had this film in post-production for over a year.

Anurag Kashyap's GANGS OF WASSEYPUR in Cannes Directors’ Fortnight

Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur has been selected to be showcased under the Directors’ Fortnight section at the prestigious Festival de Cannes. The two-part film will be screened during the festival, to be held from May 16 to 27.

Produced by Viacom 18, Gangs of Wasseypur is the second Indian film to be shown under the section after Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen in 1994.

Also travelling to Cannes is Kashyap’s home production, Peddlers, which has been officially selected under the Un Certain Regard category. Directed by Vasan Bala — who has assisted Kashyap on several films — it is the second Indian film after Vikramaditya Motwane’s Udaan (2010) to make it to this category. “Three of our films have made it to Cannes this year. I am very happy,” said an elated Kashyap, who is currently out of the country.

Gangs of Wasseypur is a gangster revenge drama spanning six decades and three generations set in Wasseypur, a small, cinema-obsessed section of Dhanbad in Jharkhand. The film’s cast does not include big stars and Manoj Bajpayee is in one of the key roles. The film will release in two parts in India, with the first release slated for June. At Cannes, however, Kashyap will be the second filmmaker after Quentin Tarantino with Kill Bill to showcase both parts of a series at one go.

Peddlers, on the other hand, is set in Mumbai and revolves around a woman on a mission, a man living a lie and a drifter.

There will be 21 feature films, including 2 documentaries, and two short film programmes in the section.

Gangs Of Wasseypur Will Be First Commercial Indian Film To Be Screened At Directors Fortnight At Cannes Film Festival 2012

The Indian cinematic masterpiece Gangs Of Wasseypur, is set to make film history as the first commerical Bollywood film to be part of the 65th Cannes Film Festival’s Directors’ Fortnight segment.

Produced and presented by one of India’s leading integrated film companies, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, with the young, cutting-edge film director Anurag Kashyap at the helm, Gangs Of Wasseypur is a mainstream commercial Indian film, which tells an epic tale, spanning 60 years of a feuding family’s life set against the backdriop of the rural coal communities in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, India.

Gangs Of Wasseypur combines clever filmmaking with a powerful, high-concept and entertaining plot, with revenge at its core. Accentuated by esteemed performances by a talented and eclectic cast comprising of Hindi cinemas finest, Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Richa Chadda, the film is cleverly told in two separate films. Generating widespread interest from critics and audiences alike, Gangs Of Wasseypur breaks with Indian cinema conventions and from what we have heard does it brilliantly.

Anurag Kashyap is renowned for his work in creating a niche in Indian cinema’s ‘avant-garde’ space. He is also the mastermind behind Indian cinematic directorials as Black Friday, a controversial and award-winning film about the 1993 Mumbai bombings, and the award-winning screenwriter of such international cinematic successes as Satya and Water.

Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and the Cannes Film Festival will hold special media and trade screenings of Gangs Of Wasseypur on the 22nd of May 2012. Other highlights for the film during the festival week will include cocktails hosted by Viacom18 Motion Pictures at the NFDC India Pavilion, and a debate forum on Bollywood’s changing place within Indian cinema.

No one believed in Gangs of Wasseypur script: Anurag Kashyap

Anurag Kashyap is a happy man with his three films being screened at the ongoing Cannes film festival in different sections but the director says his two-part revenge saga Gangs of Wasseypur almost did not get made as no one believed in the script initially.

"Gangs of Wasseypur is a film that people did not believe in. I have been wanting to make this film for quite sometime. People asked me why I wanted to work on this film and not something like Dev D which was a success. So it almost did not get made. I don't understand the concept of re-doing the same thing. But then Viacom 18 people came forward knowing that it had no big star cast, it was in two parts and was too long," Anurag said.

Kashyap, who is already in Cannes, says he is awaiting the screening of two part Wasseypur and home production Peddlers with a lot of nervousness.

"We have to deliver first. I have not seen the films so I will watch them with the audience but I am scared about their response to the films," says the director, who is keen to take his films beyond the Indian diaspora.

Kashyap's films have been recognised worldwide for their unique approach in storytelling, which is often bereft of the usual Bollywood cliches.

The director says he wants to continue reaching out to new audiences. "I had a dark period from 2007 to 2009. That was the time when my biggest support was outside India. Because I am getting to make movies here I can't abandon them. For me that market is very important as it kept me alive as a filmmaker when I had no support here."

"The audience defines your longevity in this business. My audience is non-diaspora. It was hard for Indians to digest a film like Yellow Boots, the diaspora is more conservative. But there is a different audience which is interested in my films and I want to explore that," said Kashyap.

Wasseypur, Kashyap's most ambitious project till now, tells the story of revenge set in the world of coal mafia. The film stars Manoj Bajpayee, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Huma Qureshi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Reema Sen and others.

"Revenge is a very interesting theme but it is important to use it well. Through revenge we are telling many more interesting stories. The canvas is bigger in this film because I am telling the entire story of the mafia's origin."

Kashyap, the man behind films like Black Friday, Dev D and That Girl In Yellow Boots, says it is his first commercial film with lots of songs and dance.

"If I get the chance to make a commercial film like Wasseypur then I want to make commercial films all my life," maintains the director who feels that the film has the potential to change the ways of Bollywood.

"I hope that it brings change. I would want it to happen someday, this film or any film. Kahaani has changed a lot of things but I want to fix it further. If this film works, makes the cost and shows profit, I will be set free. My lifelong struggle has been that to make a good film, you need a good story, a good team and good actors.

"You don't need a star. If something like Wasseypur works, everybody would get a bit more confidence. I feel the industry has to change. The filmmakers don't often get enough credit for their work and that should change," said Kashyap.

The two parts of Wasseypur will be screened back to back at Cannes parallel section Director's Fortnight while his home production Peddlers, directed by debutante Vasan Bala will be competing at the Cannes Critics Week.

Kashyap, whose production house is dedicated to encourage young storytellers, says he does not make it easy for his directors.

"I always tell people to work on their script first. Vasan is one of the most brilliant boys in our company and he wanted to experiment in a certain way. If he wants to do that then he needs to take the harder route. I don't make it easy for anyone because I don't have money. I have to raise money for every film."

"Guneet (producer) is always running around to raise money. I need to believe that here is something I will stand by till the end. It is important to make it difficult for the first timers. If it is easier then they take it for granted," he said.

To my knowledge, this is probably the first true CHUTNEY style song ever to be used in a hindi film. Pretty clever of Kashyap, since this type of music, although largely popular in T&T is actually rooted in Bihar.

Gangs of Wasseypur's Cannes premiere opens to packed houses

The world premiere of Gangs Of Wasseypur was held today 22nd May 2012 at the ‘Directors Fortnight’ at the Marriott, Cannes and Manoj did make it. The leading cast and crew were there to celebrate the film including Anurag Kashyap, Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma Quereshi, Richa Chadda, Reema Sen, and the 28 year old music director Sneha Khanwalkar.

Gangs Of Wasseypur, a mainstream Indian film, combines clever filmmaking with a powerful, high-concept and entertaining plot, with revenge at its core. Accentuated by strong performances by a talented and eclectic cast comprising of Hindi cinemas finest, Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Richa Chadda, the film is cleverly told in two parts. Gangs Of Wasseypur represents the brave new Indian cinema breaking the cliches and conventions, something which Anurag Kashyap has come to be known for. The film is presented by one of India’s leading integrated film companies, Viacom18 Motion Pictures and produced by AKFPL.

The premiere for the film opened to a packed house and saw eager crowds line the streets outside the world renowned JW Marriot for the exclusive world premiere of Gangs Of Wasseypur, the first mainstream Bollywood film to be selected for the Director’s Fortnight. Onlookers screamed as the Belles of Bollywood sashayed down the red carpet and dazzled the fans with their jaw-dropping floor length gowns. Once again the supporters of the most highly anticipated Indian film of the 65th Cannes Film Festival proudly donned their statement red gamchchas as they took their seats in a fully packed 800 strong capacity screening.

Other highlights for the film during the festival week will include a debate forum on Bollywood’s changing place within Indian cinema on 23rd May.

'Gangs of Wasseypur' most negative role so far: Manoj Bajpai

Describing his role as the most negative character on screen so far, actor Manoj Bajpai says his upcoming movie Gangs of Wasseypur will be full of the masala today's audience is open to. The 43-year-old actor said he is happy that the film has got an A certificate and suggests parents and youngsters should watch the film separately, not together.

"The character Sardar Khan played by me has all the negative elements. He is full of lust, involved in all bad activities, has no morals or sense of right and wrong," Bajpai told PTI here today.

"He likes bad things, but ultimately he returns to his family and this is what the film is all about. Politics may be a part of this movie but focus of the film is on the importance of family," he said.

Bajpai said that "something new" in this role convinced him to go for this movie.

"This has something new and different which I liked. Moreover, the film's director Anurag Kashyap is a good friend of mine and I wanted to do work with him so I did not want to miss the opportunity," he said.

The actor ssid he likes to do films of all kinds ranging from commercial to art and small to big budgeted ones.

"I am fully satisfied with the 19 years of my career in acting. I do all sorts of films and I am happy that people like me in all roles and I get films of my liking which are more associated with ground realities and life," he said.

Kashyap said that he wanted to show all about the story on screen so the length is long and the film is divided in two parts.

"I wanted to show on screen all aspects and elements perfectly so the film has two parts. First part will be released on June 22. Next part will be in cinemas after 2-3 weeks of the first release," he said.

"We hope that the film will get good response from people specially in rural areas because the rural audience will find that this is their movie," he added.

Where did you get the soundtrack? I can't find it online & it isn't available in stores either here in Toronto.

Thanks for the info.

Anurag Kashyap is certainly giving indie music talent a strong ground to stand on in mainstream hindi cinema; right from Indian Ocean, to Amit Trivedi, and now Sneha Khanwalkar. It also seems their best has been with collaborating with Anurag.
