Everyone seems to be quick to bring a sledgehammer to Amitabh Bachchan's "recent career," but, really, think about it: Let's start with 2004: "Khakee": Most people are OK with this one, so, let's move on (check). "Aetbaar": Under-rated as hell. I really liked it, and Bachchan managed to single-handedly save the film (I might have "really liked it" even without him, but his performance really was excellent). Thus, check. "Dev": Phenomenal film, phenomenal performance: check. "Lakshya": Awesome movie; Amitabh decides to make a "guest appearance"; every actor is entitled to do so now and then. Check. "Deewaar": Another very under-rated effort. Likely did worse than it might have because of its title, but that's no excuse for how ignored it goes. Bachchan is amazing in his role. Check. "Kyun...! Ho Gaya Na": Personally, I like the film (leave me alone). Regardless of how one feels about the movie, most site Amitabh as one of its (perhaps few) "positive factors." So — at least as far as Amitabh's work is concerned — check. "Hum Kaun Hai?": Terrible film. Amitabh should never have signed on for this one. He was fine is what little role he did have (then again, performances were all right all around), but, again, he should not have done this one. No check. "Veer-Zaara": OK movie, did very well, Amitabh was good in his small guest role. Most people really ought not to blame him for working with Yash Chopra, anyway. Good enough for a check. "Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo": Bad movie. Very bad. Amitabh does OK, but he shouldn't have come near this one. Certainly not a check. 2004: 7 out of 9 films seem — to at least an acceptable degree — to be acceptable projects for Amitabh. 2005: "Black": Most people would uphold that this is a worthy project, and very few, indeed, would criticize Bachchan's work in it. We can move on (check). "Waqt": did well at the box office, good "family film," Bachchan only makes the movie better: check. "Bunty Aur Babli": haven't yet seen it: can't make any judgement. "Paheli": haven't yet seen it. I feel, however, that I may make a judgement based on what I've heard: The movie, people seem to say, is "good," and no one appears to say "Amitabh should not have done it." First guest role of 2005: check. "Sarkar": I don't like the movie quite so much as many others appear to (that said, I do like it), but I have no problems with the performances (though I do feel that Abhishek's work is gaining more praise than it deserves). Amitabh is superb: check. "Viruddh": great movie (though I could have done without the insane product placements), spectacular Amitabh Bachchan: check. We don't seem to have run across a problem yet. I think Amitabh's doing so many commercials and endorsements (and the slew of releases, regardless of quality, that he had in 2004) is what lends to people's perception of his doing "lower-quality" work. I think, for his own demand, he needs to be a bit less seen. That said, if anyone "must be" over-exposed, I'd prefer to see Bachchan, to anyone else, plastered everywhere.
