Hindi films nominated (shortlist) for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film:

* Mother India (1957)
* Salaam Bombay! (1988)
* Lagaan (2003)

The 1957 Hindi film Mother India was India's first submission. The film made it to the final shortlist and was nominated among four other films in the category. The film came close to winning the Academy Award but lost to Nights of Cabiria by a single vote.

Since 1984, they have missed out on only a single year in 2003, when they controversially chose not to send a film as they felt no film would be in a position to compete with films from other nations. As of 2012, only three—Mother India, Lagaan and Salaam Bombay!—Indian films have been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and no film has won the award till date.

I only want to touch people's hearts: Barfi! director Anurag Basu
22 September 2012

To many, it is surprising that Anurag Basu is the same man who helmed Kites and Barfi!. The director, who believes touching a hundred hearts is more important than Rs.100 crore box-office takings, says versatility often turns out to be a disadvantage in the film industry. "I personally feel it is a disadvantage to be a versatile director. Producers don't know where to place you because they don't know what next you will come up with," Basu told IANS.

"(As a director, I feel) You live with a film for one to two years, and so it should be entertaining. Each and every project should excite you (as a filmmaker). For me, 'Barfi!' was an altogether different experience," added the director, who has earlier helmed films as different as Gangster, Life... in a Metro and Kites.

Basu's latest offering Barfi! is drawing viewers to the theatres even a week after its release Sep 14. But he is not bothered whether it makes it to the Rs.100 crore club or makes it through the shortlist of India's entry for the Oscar this year. His prime reward, he says, is touching viewers with his storytelling - something he has successfully achieved with the movie.

"I don't know about making Rs.100 crore. But I feel it is more difficult to touch people's heart. From my film, I only want to touch hundreds or thousands of hearts and that's all that matters to me. Collection is not important for me," Basu told IANS in an interview.

Barfi! is a moving tale of love beyond words - between a deaf and mute boy Murphy, played by Ranbir Kapoor, and an autistic girl Jhilmil, essayed effortlessly by the National award-winning Priyanka Chopra.

Southern actress Ileana D'Cruz, who has made her Bollywood debut with the movie, has also left a strong impact with her performance.

The film has been hailed in cinematic circles for its simplistic, yet heartwarming treatment. The viewers are expected to understand the nearly mute narrative through sign language and the beauty is that they do.

Filmmakers like Karan Johar and celebrities like megastar Amitabh Bachchan have praised the "masterpiece" and Basu is thankful to them all. Johar said he felt "talentless" after watching "Barfi!"

"It is really overwhelming when people praise your film. For me, Karan Johar's comment means a lot. Karan Johar's message was very humbling. It takes courage and you need a big heart to praise any other director. I also received some great messages, one from Big B as well. It feels great when people admire you," he said.

For now, the filmmaker plans to work on an English version of Barfi!, work on a "small film", and later, towards the winter season of 2013, he plans to roll out the Kishore Kumar biopic with Ranbir, on floors.

In the meantime, grapevine has it that Barfi! is one among 17 films shortlisted by the Film Federation of India to send for the Academy Award category of Best Foreign Language Film.

Basu isn't sure his film will make it through.

"It is great, but I don't know how much of a chance do we have, because this year we have some wonderful films, not just from Bollywood but from regional cinema as well.

"This is a good time for Indian cinema and it's going to be very tough for the jury members to shortlist the films. (But) I hope this time we will be lucky," he added.

Actually having thought more about it, I think Barfi!, due to the many copied scenes from other international films, I doubt it has any chance at all to be nominated for an Academy award. 'Paan Singh Tomar' in my opinion stood the best chance from amongst all the movies this year.

-> BARFI (2012) and its wide range of inspirational sources.

Barfi! Has Strong Second Weekend
24 September 2012

Barfi! collected strongly in its second weekend with collections around 15 crore nett. The second weekend collections are on par with big films like Agneepath and Bol Bachchan. The only films to have a better second weekend this year are Rowdy Rathore, Housefull 2 and Ek Tha Tiger.

The collection are excellent especially in Mumbai, Delhi/Up and Mysore. Mumbai circuit collected around 5.50-5.75 crore nett in the second weekend while Delhi/UP was around 3.50 crore nett and Mysore was around 1.25 crore nett. In Mysore it may emerge amongst the top five grossing films of all time.

The film is likely to hold up strongly in the next few weeks as it is mainly small films which will hit the theatres for the next three weeks or so.

Somehow even after all these glowing reviews I can't pluck myself to make interest or be enthusiastic about this film, obviously apart from write this condescending post :bash: This just looks silly and reminds me too much of Amelie which after so many glowing reviews and Oscar nods I tried to watching a couple of times and fell asleep each time. Its really a massive borefest. Still probably end of watching Barfi! one day...

It's a good enough entertainer -- and it is also copied from a hundred sources ;-) -- as such, should not have been selected as India's entry to Oscars.

Barfi! Heads For 100 Crore Plus Business
1 October 2012

Barfi! is set to cross the 100 crore nett mark by the end of its fourth week or at least be very close. The film has grossed around 81 crore nett in two weeks and with Gandhi Jayanti on Tuesday, the third week will close in the 13-15 crore nett range giving it a three week total in the range of 94-96 crore nett.

The film has done extremely well in Mumbai and Delhi but its strongest business has come in places like Kolkatta and Bangalore. The performance in single screen markets is below the mark.

It will be the first time that a film which mainly has a multiplex audience goes on to hit a century. Prior to Barfi!, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara at 90 crore nett approx was the highest grossing film in this bracket.

Although 100 crore nett is not a major benchmark today, its still an achievement for a film like Barfi! as it had limited mass appeal.

* Barfi! was made with a budget of 30 Crore
