Also would like to see Gandhi on Blu-Ray soon. Come on Universal, how about Namesake on Blu-Ray.

HDMovies airs Gandhi in HD here in the US every now and then. I haven't watched the whole thing in HD, but what I've seen looks good. I'm sure a Blu-Ray would look even better.

Universal announced a few titles on Blu-Ray, but without release dates.

why crossed? Do you think, sony will screw it up in zeros style? :? Indeed! Gandhi in high def 1080i had been extremely good looking, so my hopes are pretty high and alive!

Every single review I have read of the Saawariya Blu-Ray disk has termed the video quality no less than reference quality and most have ranked the quality with 2-3 best blu-ray disks ever made. WOW. This I have to see for myself, an Indian film in such quality.

If the HD comes from the DI and the DI is good quality and the conversion too you get a very good looking BD. Unfortunately the DIs in India are not always good and they are usually tossed anyway once the negative is filmed out. So the HD comes from scanning the negative (or worse) again. This does not yield superior quality.
As simple as that.
There are more good DIs of Indian films but that they have been stored properly I doubt for most cases. I would like to see the HD from DI of "Rang de Basanti". That was good looking material.

For Farooq...

I understand your concerns...

However, I prefer to show the film the way it was made.
Its all about ensuring that each frame of the original 4K DPX file is truly represented on the blu-ray format as close as possible. That is all I am doing.

The work is being done at EFX, with the same HD team who worked on the final 4K colour correction, alongside the DOP and Director, during post-production.

The work will be QC'ed at a famous London Post Production House.

Every care is being taken to ensure its arrival for Blu-Ray.

Remember we are still in testing phase...

PS)
Thanks to those who e-mailed me their support :)

I have started reading this thread with GREAT interest. Thank you very much Shahran Sunny Audit for starting this thread and give us great insight to Indian blu-ray developments. I was starving for information on Indian blu-rays and was wondering what would happen after Heyy Babyy, OSO and Saawariya.

I should thank again and take my hat off for the way that you have maintained your coolness while under a baseless attack. I admire the way that you have handled the situation.

I will give my further opinion as I read through this thread.

I should say that I don't know the OP and decided to post just base on the way he/she provided information and handled a conflict.

FarooqBhai the problem with enhancing it your way is this;

Ali, Thank you very much for reading my mind. Before I read your post, I came to the same conclusion. I could see straight away that the image posted by FarooqBhai has no more details than the original. It has enhanced details by manipulating the "bits" around the edges. By doing this, an ugly edge enhancement has been added to the original and will look extremely annoying and ugly on a larger screen. I hate this type of electronic manipulation of an original film.

I KNOW HOW TO ENHANCE ANY SOURCE PROPERLY....

I'm sorry but I'd really prefer if such enhancement was NOT ON THE SOURCE as I find it highly distracting and ugly. You can use your player's and TV's controls to do such processing if you crave it. No need to spit in my soup at the same time.
The Ayngaran jpeg looks pretty good and really needs no sharpening applied on the master.
Actually, looking at the 1080p picture again I completely fail to see how this is supposed to be crap. It is a pleasing looking film like frame with no obvious digital tampering. I like it. I hope all of the film looks like this or better.

I agree with this opinion.

I cannot believe that this baseless and childish attack on Shahran Sunny Audit and Ayngaran is continuing. The so-called improvements have really damaged the original as Shahran Sunny Audit politely pointed out. If the same principle is applied to the original, I am sure, it would have been very easy to damage the original. This type of electronic manipulation would give a "false" quality enhancement in smaller screens. But when it is on a larger display all fake electronic enhancements would be exposed and the picture will become an ugly mess.

IMHO, Ayngaran will be in good hands as long as people like Sunny Audit are working for them. I believe this person is a rational human being and behaving very well under an irrational attack. When her or his work was challenged, this person did not boast about his/her knowledge but he/she was humble enough to seek a second opinion from an expert before defending his/her work. I am impressed.

Couple of questions Sunny - if I'm not wrong, you'd said earlier that you don't work for Ayngaran - are you working on this title for the Blu-ray authorers?

Secondly, any idea when this might release? I haven't bought the DVD yet, so I might just wait for this instead.

And a final thing - any chance you can try and get Ayngaran to subtitle their special features?

I do not work for Ayngaran. I am supervising this project (for Karuna) as a freelancer.
This Blu-ray version will not release until mid/late2008.

Thanks for your input. I hope people like you would help Yash Raj and Eros. I couldn't believe how Yash Raj ruined Veer-Zaara DVD with wretched edge enhancement.

Also, YashRaj is reworking DDLJ for BluRay as well.

Thanks very much for this information. Very happy to hear about this development. Hope this would be released soon.

Shankar is not a big fan of natural film grain. He likes smooth and glossy. Its his choice of film-making style and I have to respect it when doing the Blu-ray.

Concerning the other Blu Rays allegedly in the works (Sholay, DDLJ) I can only hope any restoration is done with knowledge and taste, to make the films look like a fresh print from the original negative would have looked back then, and not some digitally mutilated abomination with DNR and other artifacts all over the place.

Yes, fully agree with this. Digital enhancements may lead to a big mess, especially on large screens. I am really happy to see that other people with the same thinking as me are involved in Indian movie transfers.
