Well, one frame looks nice (the one we had already), the other is, sorry, DNRed crap. With frames like this a good quality BD that looks like film is not possible. Garbage in, garbage out. 4K is an utter waste for this kind of waxy DNR. I don't know what film makers are thinking when they ask for 4K and DNR like this. :(
Maybe they were better off with a HD camera instead, or a Genesis, a RED.

Now you can see the kind of DPX files I am working with. I am truly representing the film-maker vision.

Shankar is not a big fan of natural film grain. He likes smooth and glossy. Its his choice of film-making style and I have to respect it when doing the Blu-ray.

Couple of questions Sunny - if I'm not wrong, you'd said earlier that you don't work for Ayngaran - are you working on this title for the Blu-ray authorers?

Secondly, any idea when this might release? I haven't bought the DVD yet, so I might just wait for this instead.

And a final thing - any chance you can try and get Ayngaran to subtitle their special features?

I got the files saved to my hard-drive...will work on them soon, and show you my results a bit later...
Thanks for these 2 frames :)

I do not work for Ayngaran. I am supervising this project (for Karuna) as a freelancer.
This Blu-ray version will not release until mid/late2008.

Its not Sholay. The DC will never release on blu-ray.
Too many legal complications surrounding it.

I have a friend in YashRaj...well, acquaintance. He'll go nameless.

As for Sholay - it is being released May 5th...pre-orders started already.

Basically yes. But does Shankar understand that the difference between 2K and 4K is mainly how grain is resolved (it's sharper) and using 4K is pointless if you 'wax/smear' everything afterwards? Does he understand that there are cameras out there that are grainless and possibly much better suited to his vision? I don't presume he actually likes the waxy look and all the smearing and DNR artifacts. ?
He's in charge to make it look as he wants. Not my decicison. My decision is to not buy as I absolutely detest this look.
Concerning the other Blu Rays allegedly in the works (Sholay, DDLJ) I can only hope any restoration is done with knowledge and taste, to make the films look like a fresh print from the original negative would have looked back then, and not some digitally mutilated abomination with DNR and other artifacts all over the place.

This is Indian cinema. Not many understand how to get the best in the Medium. I blame his DOP technicians really, as they could have advised him.

Robo will be different. Ayngaran has big plans for that feature!!!
