Have you ever seen DVD and HD next to each other on a full HD res display?

Yeah, at stores. Sure, they look a bit different

That tells me you have not seen DVD and HD on the same HD res monitor because they do not look a bit different if the HD deserves to be called HD and the monitor as well. The difference is as big as bad VHS versus top DVD (if not more). On smaller monitors the effect is diminished, though. You need a big picture to fully appreciate the difference (1.5 m and more).

I agree!! with Mike!!If once you have seen true HD, 720P, 1080I, even there is no way back, Hindi dvds are literally trash infront of them..1080p hmm tell me that!! take me there! 8)

I totally disagree about the difference between HD-DVD and DVD being as pronounced as that between DVD and VHS. I've seen High Definition running (at 720) in stores, and I admit that it looks good. That said, I don't think it would be worth it to shell out big bucks for titles in HD-DVD if they have perfectly good DVD counter-parts (which you own). I just don't think that paying another $30.00 or so for films, so to experience them in "high-def.," significantly affects your enjoyability of the movies. Additionally, most people don't have "monstrously large" (50" or more) television sets in their homes; on a modest 27" 4:3 television set, I think (good) DVDs are about as great as most people would care to seek. I realize that there are certainly those out there who "must" get the "best" thing available (meaning, they'll pay for 1080p even when it's barely supported), but I'm not one of those people. I'm not so apathetic as to settle for some shitty DVD that's cropped from the sides, stretched vertically, and presented in mono sound (when the film it's of was shot in stereo), but I guess I'm too practical to demand that all my movie-viewing experiences incorporate the latest technology on the market.

I've also seen XBOX 360 games (XBOX 360 exclusive ["Call of Duty 2"]).

I’m all out of touch with the HD scene at the moment; I’ve neither seen a proper display of HD output nor have I the equipment to view HD content… but might be interested in the near future.

I think I would pay about £20-£30 UKP for high quality video discs that last, if I was still passionate about the movies :nopity:

It is, and more. We talk about what the system can do, not what specific titles do. There is no lower bound for quality on DVD or HD, only upper limits. 720p is not the best HD. 1080p is.
The difference between the two is easily visible with material that has1080p resolution. To appreciate the difference best one should not sit farther away than ~2 - 2.5 screen heights (to fully resolve the detail) and the bigger the screen the better. What you see in shops is irrelevant and not conclusive (way too many variables). When I compare 1080i versions of films with DVDs (Hollywood) on my 2.4m wide screen the difference goes from obvious to in a totally other league, depending on source material, transfer quality and bit rate. HD masters made from Bollywood original negatives for films like Devdas will look phenomenal if the transfer is done right. I'm afraid there will be issues with noise reduction because the negatives are not mint from all striking of prints from them. And these Bollywood mastering houses never resisted the temptation to filter their stuff to death when they saw grain, dirt etc.
Anyway, don't be too surprised if DCH and Lakshya appear on BR or HD-DVD this year or early next year. That's all I'm going to say. :D

Whenever I go to a store like Best Buy or Fry's and look at the home theater setups, they are usually showing some HDTV broadcast (often the Discovery Channel) or a DVD. And even then the displays are not often calibrated properly. I think one has to go into the high end stores to see good HD displays.

Were the French DVDs of Devdas and Sholay made from HD masters?

I know that 1080p, and not 720p, is the "highest" available, but I've never seen it in action (I have seen 1080i, though, and it [in my view] is not exceptionally different from 720p). Again, I just feel that I am happy with "good quality" DVDs, and just don't care to spend a lot of money on a new format (unless, the new format totally takes over, and I end up not even having a machine for the old one). I think for instance, that the DVD of Laskhya is great, and I don't feel that I'd be tempted to purchase a high-def. copy of it, any time soon. That said, certainly, if a title I do not currently own (but wish to), is not available on a great DVD (e.g., Sholay, Agneepath, Mera Naam Joker), then I might just spend a few dollars (but no more) extra, to pick up a stellar HD version.

Both are Farhan Akhtar movies. Is he a home theater buff? The Lakshya DVD was HD-sourced.
