Gold Media/ Silver Media

With time all of us are discovering more and more DVDs that stop playing due to disc rot and/ or Media (Gold/ Silver) used.

How do we recognize Gold or Silver Media??

For the same DVD title from same brand turns out on different media.
Is Gold/ Silver media used for a disc is Dealer Sensitive, Batch Sensitive, Price Sensitive, Replication Sensitive or Legal/ Illegal Sensitive?? If cheap DVDs are on cheap silver media, its waste of money even if the DVD costs less than $1. I’d rather pay much more and get a long lasting DVD.

If Silver Media is used, Dual layer DVDs are first to fail. Some stop playing within weeks of its manufacture.

I would like this Gold/ Silver media info to be shared so that we don’t waste money on bad discs and also discover the common grounds for the Silver Media Discs on the market.

I wanted to include this info in the reviews on zulm but the problem is getting a balanced view on this situation. Info on DVD-ROM media is not easy to find - it's not just matter of gold and silver media - it's the different grade media you get too. You can get low quality gold media that will rot and likewise get high quality silver media that doesn't rot easily. And to complex matters there's a mixture of these gold/media discs now - it's not always easy to tell if it's a gold disc or not!

Well,in that I case, we still need to figure out whether the quality of media used depends on Batch, Wholesaler, Sale Price, DVD retailer, Country, Legal or Illegal replication etc.

If we can't identify media type, is there any useful info or advice on what and where to buy a long lasting DVD??

There is no point in saving a few dollars and discovering soon that the disc is not playable any more.

Hello.
I recentally purchased the DVD Nirnayam (Malayalam) from a local store here in Toronto ($25.00 Canadian) and when I went to play it it did not work I found a few other titles manufactured by "Surya" had the same problem. On closer inspection when I turned the disc over I saw a large black mark that looked like what you are discribing. I Contacted them and sent one back to Surya (The Retailer I Bought It From Would Do Nothing), And Surya Was Very nice about it. (I Still Have One left To Send Back).

This Is The only Time i have Experienced This (So Far)

Well!! Rana ji! a simple answer to ur question, if manufacturer like vs/md/spark/eros/bei/yrf etc have used shitty media, god save u!

Now if they have used good media, and u are getting ur disc from freshly released batch, u lucked out!

By the time, next batch is out, it has been to DUPE makers! courtesy those guys, who want to sell yrf dupes $20 for $18, u saved two bucks online etc! but LOST big time!

Now by the time it made to $5 then it is HOPELESS!

This is my humble, speculative, evaluation, may be another person involved in this buisness himself can give u a true scenerio of state of affair!

Duniya, I rented "Chandralekha" from Surya and it started freezing up towards the end. I don't remember if it was on gold or silver media.

Guys... if the DVD is single layered, then the media doesnt really matter (or does it ?)... The logic is like this :-

The dvd, when it is dual layered, screws up as the bonding agent between the two layers gets oxidized... (Ag - > Ag2O (silver oxide)).
If its a gold media disc it generally doesnt happen. Now if the DVD is single layered this problem shouldnt occur as there is "suppposedly" no double layer in the disc.

Has anyone noticed any freezing problems with their single layered discs ?

would just like to share a sad, sad story since we're on the topic of faulty discs. i was watching dil chahta hai last night and two thirds of the way through, i was feeling especially proud of the fact that this was the third time i was watching my dch dvd and i've had absolutely no problems with freezing/skipping so far. 'those poor zulmis with inferior discs' i thought to myself. but then it happened - after the opera scene the video started pixellating and the sound was disjointed. then suddenly, i found myself watching akshaye and saif talking in the hospital - i missed a few very important scenes. i rewinded, forwarded, paused, and played but nothing i did allowed me to watch those missed scenes. i watched the remainder of the film with the sour feeling that i have just been robbed of one of my favorite movies by bad media. i am sad to say that i am now a member of the dch faulty dvd club.

does anyone have the facilities/know-how to rip and burn dch onto two dvd-rs (pre-intermission on one, post-intermission on the second)? i'm sure you'll find a lot of customers here on zulm.

Looks like Disc Rot in Indian DVDs has grown to be an Epidemic. I would guess, because of this frustation at these proportions, even law wouldn't find us guilty if we downloaded all these DVDs on our PC Hard Drives. I think it costs about $ 10 (Cdn) in PC disc space for one dual layer DVD. I don't fancy using my PC for storing these DVDs, but what alternative have they left us, the serious Indian Movie fans. Buy a replacement DVD every 3 months??

You are basing your judgement on just one release or are you saying they have Do-Shikaried all their releases?
