"Bombay"
Released by Ayngaran

roughly 2.20:1 aspect ratio (16x9 enhanced)
Tamil mono mixed to fake 5.1
Telugu mono mixed to fake 5.1
Video Previews for Aalavandhaan, 12B, and Chocklet

Video

Though "Bombay" is from 1995, there are a few problems with the print. I noticed a few lagging hairs, and there is some dust. But overall, the print is fine.

Very white whites sometimes have the effect where it is washed out (is this called "clipping"???). Colors are good, as expected, but there is some DVNR, causing slightly blurry motion. Finer details are often lost because of this. I noticed some moire pattern effects, such as on someone's lungi.
Very little edge enhancement was applied to the image. The DVNR and sometimes washed out whites make this one of Ayngaran's more disappointing transfers, though still very good.

I believe this is a first for an Indian DVD: There are separate Tamil and Telugu audio tracks. The fidelity of both is limited and they definitely do not sound as good as a modern DTS or Dolby Digital soundtrack would. Dialogue is clear, but the "s" sound produces a weird hissing effect. I wish the soundtrack was better. If Ayngaran could have gotten access to the original masters, they could have made a true 5.1 remix, which would have helped with A.R. Rahman's music and the riot scenes. I'd give the Telugu track the edge in sound quality, though both were not particularly great. English subtitles are included, which are often too wordy and occasionally too literal.

Not true even among Telugu DVDs. Geethanjali by KAD has both Telugu and Tamil Audio and Sampoorna Ramayanam a Bapu Classic has Audio in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, and Kanada. Sampoorna Ramayan has subtitles even in Japanese.

got a little too busy lately with a new addition to our family(A baby girl) and my son into his crazy two's. Also, for some strange reason whenever i tried to post a message I kept getting a message like you don't have access to post message. Somehow it worked fine today.

I will try to post the screen shots of Geetanjali soon. It's not shit*y like most KAD titles are. It's pretty decent and worthy to own and is much much better than most Eros/B4U DVDs.

I heard Gharshana another ManiRatnam movie is of similar quality. Will appreciate if someone can confirm.

It would have been great if they could have included the Hindi dub on this DVD. The other thing I fail to understand is this obsession with mixing original mono tracks into pseudo DD 5.1 That does not make the sound any better in fact it actually makes it a lot worse. We should right to these comapnies and demand that they leave the mono tracks untouched unless they can actually go back and create a real 5.1 mix from the original audio stems. I know, I know. One can dream atlease, right?
