So dance a merry jig on your shemeroo copy.
Sorry don't have any further details but would expect it to be widescreen anamorphic and in the correct aspect ratio.

http://www.bfi.org.uk/about/contact/index.html

The email is probably video.films@bfi.org.uk

I got this information in reply to a query about NFT cinema programming.

This is the best news I have had all year! If the BFI are releasing it then it should be a good quality disc - with great subtitles. Also if they can get any extras they will also be made available. I really hope this is true - at last a decent copy of Pakeezah on DVD!!! :D

Any idea if BFI will release it in NTSC or PAL?? I guess it will be PAL because that is the format in UK.

BFI quality is not as good as expected sometimes they nick NTSC masters made by Criterion and convert them into PAL through substandard dubbing machines. The films they transfer themself also has problems as they are not restored and have not quality to them. Still it will be better then the current Shemeroo version.

My only hope is that they obtained the full uncut version of the film and presented it in its original Mono track in anamorphic OAR.

BFI releases are generally PAL region 2,
but the two Ritwik Ghatak films released recently were NTSC region 0.
They are "Cloud Capped Star" (highly recommended) and "River Called Titash" (not yet seen).

anamorphic OAR? Hopefully just OAR, as it's a 4:3 presentation.

Pakeezah was shot in CinemaScope. And as far as I know, it has never been presented in OAR on any video format.

I was thinking the same dragun, as when I watched on tele long time ago, it said on credits, cinemascope!! but I was not 100%...on my memory!! so pakeezah should be released as anamorphic widescreen edition..I will wait for BEI to do r1??

No ... I contacted BFI a few months ago to find out what was happening - but I have had no reply.

It still shows up on upcoming relases on sites such as DVD Beaver - but my reckoning is that it will still be a while before we see a decent DVD of Pakeezah. :(
