It appears that according to this post UK based MOC ( Masters of Cinema) might be releasing some Satyajit Ray titles - if it is true then i think this is excellent news, esp. given the restoration work they do is top-notch and in some instances over-whelm even criterion ( Onibaba ) .

Here’s hoping this comes true

Ray has gotten short shrift on DVD. Except for the Artificial Eye DVDs of the Apu Trilogy, no good versions of his films are on the format. Let's hope this is true.

Ray /Ghatak / Mrinal Sen /Adoor /Mani Kaul / John Abraham etc. etc . so many of the indian new wave folks are missing on DVD/VHS/VCD .

Also another master i am really looking forward to is Kenji Mizoguchi , so far he is non-exitent in R1 ( i have on-order some of his R2/R3 releases) - thankfully criterion is releasing Ugetsu this november .

Here is a nice article on DVDs that dont exist anywhere :(

India just doesn't know how to properly market its best filmmakers abroad. Look at the representation that Bergman, Fellini, Truffaut, Godard, Visconti, etc. got in the US in their times, as well as on video, LD, and DVD. We have produced filmmakers in their league as well, but their films are either unavailable or available in poor form. Ray is the lucky one, in that about 12 of his films have gotten decent VHS tapes, but for his other films you either have to get poor quality VCDs or DVDs or rent an old nth generation Indian store tape. Same with Ghatak and Sen, only they never had Columbia Tristar or Artificial Eye releases of their films.

I have an easier time finding Thomas Edison's films than I do Adoor Gopalakrishnan's.

Did not want to start another thread ..., it appears FACETS (R1) will be releasing two satyajit ray title . It sucks that it has to be FACETS ( which imo is the ERO$ of R1 releases ) - but still ....

1) NAYAK
On his way to New Delhi for an awards ceremony, a famous young actor (Uttam Kumar Chatterjee) meets a pretty journalist who devises a plan to expose his shallowness and narcissism. Instead, the reporter causes the actor to reexamine his life, and the conclusions he reaches are both devastating and profound. Satyajit Ray's psychological drama utilizes flashbacks and dream sequences to capture the complex psychologies of its characters. In Bengali with English subtitles.

DVD-DV77802 - ON ORDER - Expected to ship on or before 12/03/2005. $29.95

2) ADVERSARY

Image

A young man, graduated from college, is unable to find meaningful employment. His ensuing hardships and personal grief, magnified by the tense and impersonal setting of Calcutta, make for a most devastating film experience. While at times reminiscent of the emotionally wrenching Italian neo-realist classics, this beautiful film often seems to outstrip them with its overwhelming spiritual perspective and astounding depth of feeling. One of Ray's brilliant masterpieces. In Bengali with English subtitles.

DVD-DV77805 - OUT OF STOCK TEMPORARILY : - Expected to ship within 4 weeks. $29.95
